calm down, it hasn't even been 1 hour.

some things that might help, do them at your pace and in any order:

- run the installer as administrator, right click the file and select run as administrator.

- screenshot the error message, windows 7 has a built in tool for this called the snipping tool, available in the start menu. alternatively just push print screen, then go to mspaint and push paste. attach jpg to forum post in this thread.

- run malwarebytes, scan your computer. can't hurt.

- redownload the installer, it's a long shot.

- welcome to the forum, sorry the circumstances are not better.

My apologies, I've just updated from 3.0. I've tried everything above. The error message itself is very non descript. It simply says access denied with no other information. present. I've attached the snippet of the error.

hay, when i tried to update to 3.2.6 i had the same issue.

i had to uninstall fleet ops,
then re-install fleet ops by selecting the run as administrator.
then install the patch as administrator as well.

you're right, that's far from helpful. why do they bother with error messages if they don't help fix the problem.

when do you get this error? when trying to open the file? or after opening it.

another thing that would help me, install processexplorer

run it, then get that error message to occur. then in processexplorer look for the icon on the toolbar at the top that looks like a gun reticule, its tooltip is "find window's process (drag over window)". drag that reticule over the error message window and release. then the process that made that error message will be highlighted in the list in processexplorer.

@hellodean: 3.2.7 is a full install, so those instructions modified for 3.2.7 now read: uninstall fleetops, then run 327 setup as administrator.

Hey Dean, I completely uninstalled any trace of Fleet ops before attempting to install 327. Myles its as soon as I double click on the file. I'll try the process explorer :)

The file causing the error is FOsetup327.tmp. This has me stumped. ???

If its just "access denied" you could check the hard drive/directory security settings. If your user has no rights for your drive some programs might run into problems, even if it works 99% of the time. Also you could temporarily disable your antivirus, if you have one. Maybe the installer does something it doesn't like and it intercepts the command and the installer doesn't know what happened.

afaik fleetops doesn't technically need any registry info, so you should be able to copy the program data over to your new computer.

copy the folder C:\program files\activision\star trek armada ii fleet operations to your new computer. put the folder anywhere you want.

Myles speaks wisely -- this works very well. A few years back my disk gained a scratch which makes installing A2 impossible, but the copy-protection still recognises it; I've kept the game going over the years by copying the installation folder from harddrive to harddrive, and it's a copy of that folder which I use as a base for reinstalling Fleet Ops if I need to.

all of activision's star trek titles from that era had weak copy protection. i used to run bridge commander from my pirated a2 cd.

To be honest I should probably just use (Optec's? Doca Cola's?) nocd version of the executable that's available elsewhere on the web.
