What makes a good team and good team strategy

I've been thinking about what makes a good team and from recent experiences have come to the conclusion that it requires communication.  If you can coordinate and communicate with your team, odds are good that you will win or at least pose to be a big challenge to your opponents.  I've noticed that some people expect their teammates to handle themselves alone and prefer it if you did not help them on their raids.  I don't agree with this style of play and find that it impacts the team negatively.  Also, if you ask for help of any kind and your teammate ignores you, then the game might as well be over.
Another thing to keep in mind is what type of players are your teammates and what type of player you are.  Are you casual competitive, or aggressive competitive?  A casual competitive player plays for fun.  They want to win, but it is not the end of the world if they don't.  They are generally friendly players and enjoy the spirit of the game and good sportsmanship.  Aggressive competitive players are not usually friendly in game and some may even be combative and criticize their teammates.  There are exceptions to both types.
And finally, as in real life, no matter how hard we try, we probably won't get along with everyone we meet.  I've had teammates yell at me in game, which kinda demoralizes me and causes me to stop putting effort into my game.  Just recently that happened, which caused me to post this topic.  If a teammate is struggling, advice usually does more than harsh words.  Communication and good sportsmanship are key to having a good game.

Agreed. I don't play online anymore. My first match everyone expected me to handle myself, which I did, but I didn't have a clue about online tactics, so I was out literally within 15 minutes, with a lot of cursing from my team mate

Ahh bummer, guys!  I'm sorry that someone was yelling at you :(.

I myself sometimes get a little heated when the critical moments arrive in game, but I try REALLY hard to always keep it in good fun and use it to help teach a newer teammate the effect of what they're doing or not doing.

Proton, I'm SURE that if you came back online now you'd get a warm reception from a number of the "oldschool" players who've known you on the forums :).

Yeah, online play is much more fun actually and I really enjoy it! Though I'm such a noob I had and have a great time online
So forget about those annoying people and join us

Concerning good and bad teams I think communication is everything. You and your team should know what you can and cannot expect from each other. Then everything should work out fine :)

I think I was just a little put off, as it was the first game I'd played online, so I expected it to be similar to IA, but it wasn't! And it resulted in a fair few threats from my team mate

But yeah, I'll give it another shot, looking forward to seeing you online  ^-^

If you want some common hints about multiplayer playing I'd advise going to the Cooperative Multiplayer section on the guide too :) . I'm sure you won't experience the same difficulty twice - just be sure to mention you are new and would like people to take it a bit easier. there are plenty of folk who will be willing to help you gain your FO legs :)

If you want to be an effective team player, just listen to whatever anyone says, help them out with raids and defense, and offer valuable input/intelligence.

But before you are ready to communicate...BUILD ships and do not turtle. Blue is responding to a game we had today where he was my ally and turtling as Assim Borg while I tried to defeat Klingons. In the mean time the Fed player could mass a significant fleet without beeing harmed because the Borg was turtling and building only Auto Assims.

Blue you cannot expect that your teammate tells you what to do all the time. I need an ally that knows what to do. Just sitting there and doing almost nothing (not even expanding properly) is the wrong way. And I said multiple times to you to build ships instead of sending single dodes and building 3 auto assims which stayed in your base almost all the time. And now you complain that ppl are not friendly.

To sum it up: I told you to build ships and stop turtling...you did nothing else but that AND asking for resources (i did not notice that in-game).

Usually I am not complaining much about new players but if you dont listen to more experienced players I don't see any hope for a fun game for all of us.

To answer the question of the thread:

A good teammate is one that can deal with at least one enemy on its own! AND in addition is able to help others. (remember the order)

First off, I wasn't naming names this was an in general post pointing out some frustrations.  You weren't the only player who was cross with me in game.  I've played a lot of online games so far and have been yelled at twice.  I was also trying a new resource strategy a past teammate suggested, but it failed since I didn't know the map and all of the secondary dilithium moons were too far away.  So, I had only one dilithium moon to work with, had all the tritanium I ever needed.  You pointed out, very harshly, that I needed to build more ships.  Well, it was slow going, but I built 3 autoassims and 2 dodes with the limited dilithium I had.  Also managed to finally get a pyramid out.  Which by that time it was too late.  Also, the fed player was a n00b and asked for me to go easy on them.  I decided to help you with the klingons.

I was not expecting you to tell me what to do.  I was expecting you to ask me what was slowing me down and assist when you could.  Since you didn't see my pleas for dilith help.  I also didn't just send dodes one at a time.  I had one dode built early in the game and was following your fleet to harass the klingons.  The klingons had no one defending them and I was easily able to take out their entire trite mining freighters there.  While you were retreating your fleet for some unknown reason.  I actually had plenty of time to sit there and plink away at their mining station before they could get a fleet in to kill me.  I felt very alone there, that was a perfect opportunity to kill a couple stations.  With the Klingons crippled we could have handled the feds easily.  I also noticed that they had no problems teaming up on me.  I don't understand why you don't like combining fleets.

Yelling at n00b players isn't the same as giving good advice or suggestions.  In fact, n00bs are more likely to not ever play the game again if they think this is how the community is.  I've played with a lot of nice people, so I know better.

Hmmm ....

Well may I surmise by saying that, since 3.1 came out, we've had a MASSIVE influx of new players to FO online.  There are TONS more now than there were pre-3.1 and even more now that we have the beauty and balance of 3.1.2.

What this means is that there are "Old" Players who've been around pre-3.1 and more or less know now how to dominate a game.

There are the Up-and-Coming players (most of whom joined right after 3.1) who have become very effective players and more or less know what they're doing to effectively play a team game.

Then there are TONS of new players as of 3.1.2 who have rushed onto Tunngle (rightly so ) and are looking for games.  Most of these players are familiar with a lot of the replays and some have notions that there is some sort of "ladder" to climb.

  There's not.

I really hope that everyone who plays, regardless of skill level or "experience", can remember that everyone is going to have varying skill levels.  Some people excel VERY quickly like butterbread and surprise many of us with how quickly they get good.  Others take longer and we all need to remember that the point is to HAVE FUN!  There is no scoreboard; there is no bracket keeping track; nor are there gorgeous cheerleaders waiting to fornicate with the "winners" (not yet at least :D).

So everyone chill out!  Being recorded and posted online does not make you somehow "responsible" for the conduct of your teammate.  It looks WAY better online to the rest of our community to see a good player helping out a struggling teammate who maybe doesn't know what to do.  I confess that I get frustrated sometimes online and get pushy (even the mighty Dominus_Maximus_Penisface gets frustrated :D), but we are all human.  Just remember to HELP your teammate and that no one is going to look down on you-

-Unless you cheat  :hmmm:
