The 3rd or even 4th miners don't need to really pay for themselves, if you steal them from someone else.

That's about how how much time it takes for a miner to fill up once on dilithium, and all but the Klingon miner cost less than 150 dil (max holding). So round it up to a nice even 30 seconds of extra labor to recoup 1 additional miner.

Is it really only that? Is the difference in mining output of 2 miners and 3 miners about as much as a whole miner after 20-30 seconds?

Well, if you consider the mining rates found here you can see that since 3 miners gets you 435 dil/min and 2 only 366 dil/min, the cost of an extra miner is covered by the difference in roughly two minutes (before what I said was just the time it takes to collect its own weight in tritanium/dilithium). :)

Sometimes u can see 4 or 5 miners around one of my moons.
But that doesnt mean i am stupid or crazy. xD
Its because i order retreating miners that were stationed at an expansion that got attacked and destroyed to resume their work at a mining station near them.
This way they unload the cargo thats possibly remaining in their holds at the new station.
Thats especially important for borg as they have an significantly greater cargo hold.

but only two (3 rarely) will ever have anything in their holds, and miners die so quickly...
