If I had a fixed number of resources to build a task force for an Avalon for a scenario, I would likely build E2's and roughly the same or a few more Akira's.
In a real match tho, E2's are the best because similar speed/range.

There's nothing wrong about havin a couple Sabers/Canaverals with Avalons as well. Canaverals are especially good for that because of their buffing-abilities.

If you have the third tech for cannaverals up then yeah, otherwise they're best to remain at a base so they can boost the stations sensor range.
True a few sabers can sometimes be useful, but it's a gamble because sometimes the hyperimpulse and replaceweapon bug cause ships to suicide and generaly makes micro difficult. Really useful is if a Mayson/Risner combo is in play and some Norways are on the field to keep special energy full for support ships.

Canaverals are powerful ships that have some pretty smashing pulses. They do quite well against those small, fast destroyers that would be giving the avalons some trouble.

Some great responses so far, thanks, everyone, I've been testing out a few ships to see what happens, if memory recalls (and its been a few days and I've tried a few ships, so...), the Excelsior's have in fact generally kept pace with the Avalon's.
Of course, depending on what your doing there's also the method of all out sending a few ships ahead of the Avalon's to "clear a path" as I like to say. I've done that a few times, if you've got enough ships and at the right tech, it works alright. Though, that's not really escorting them in the strictest sense as so much as simply seeking out the potential threats and wiping them out first.
