Phaser, Polaron or Plasma, trust me, I'm flying a sciencevessel and subsystemdamage is one of my strongest abilitys. But just every 2min for one sort of subsystem. Also plasmatorp with the torpspecial from tactical officer will infect all ships in 1km around the impactpoint with the damage over time.

Or never disabled the shields of a NPC-battleship?

i must agree, tetryon weapons sounds nice but 2.5% change of doing small amount of extra shield damage is not that great... (around 150-180 bonus damage to all shields) is not that much
but if you really want to try tetryon weapons then i would recommend trying out Polarized Tetryon Beam Array which is a reward from “The New Link” mission
proc chance is increased from 2.5% to 10%

Interesting. Right now I use all phaser weapons, two dual heavy cannons, a dual bank and a standard rear bank. with quantum torps fore and aft. Should I stick with this kind of load out or do you guys think I should go for, say plasma canons?

I'd just say use whatever seems most interesting, Phaser and Disruptor weapons might be interesting to see.
Personally, I'm sticking with the canon Fed weapons for the time being.

Yeah, that is what I have been doing, though I like the look of the TOS phasers. I might do that mission over and over to get those weapons.

I would say Polaron > Phaser > Plasma. So no.
Not for the energyweapons. The damage over time happens just with a chance of 2,5%.
For the torps and mines, i don't know what quantum does. But I use no aft torps. Just a turret (good against shuttles or this energysucking torps or heavy plasmatorps or mines) and mines. But Plasmatorps and mines do everytime damage over time.
And nice.
The side is down for maintance. It would not affecting gameplay.

Never seen an MMO with so much downtimes and so big serverproblems. Even other F2Ps don't have that much problems

I've run phasers mostly since I pilot a sluggish cruiser. I stick to 3 fore and 3 after beam arrays, and a torpedo fore, and an aft turret. I am unable to fit a federation ship without mounting at least one torpedo tube. lol.

Turrets are 360°, which is good for cruisers. If you use forward-toepedoes you could also think about a dual-plasma-beam bank.

There are a few fleets with FO-players around. Mort for example is or has been (dunno if he's active atm) in the MSFC-Taskforce.

I don't like turrets. I'd rather count on my broad sides, and warp plasma 3 letting me pick my angles mostly. if someone is directly on my 6, I usually hope I've savaged them inbound enough with Fire at will 1/2. Plus 4 aft turrets, has the fire power of maybe 3 beam arrays tops. so my aft fire power is actually higher with 3 beam arrays and one turret.
