A Look At Free-To-Play Star Trek - Infinite Space in Action

I'm sure most of you already heard of this or even saw the trailer. Certainly this trailer is nothing more than a hype creating thing. Preassuming that this is intentional hyping I feel the game itself will fail horribly (because of that) - though it's not the game that bothers me but the franchise of Star Trek (Gaming) that along with the relaunch of Trek (Star Trek XI, Star Trek Online) somehow changed into a thing I can't name Star Trek anymore. Instead it reminds me of something really different: Star Wars and Dragonball Z. For example: Listen to that Defiant engine sound when it passes the screen. I mean wtf? Then this never ending war stories where every famous race plays same roles over and over again. I have to throw up when once again I read that friends become foes and enemies create alliances to form up another hyperstimulated war experience inside the Trek universe. It's rediculous where that franchise is heading towards. It's "Star Total War" - if this is what the franchise will turn out to be, then Star Trek is dead. The Last Frontier is reached and we can all stop to hope for a universe that strives for peace. Star Trek was about that. It was about how our future could look like, how different cultures could live together even though foes tried to end that and thus war was the result. But now? It's the plain waste of ship, weaponsfire and crew that is nothing more than an entertainment blast. I can't see any sustainability here. Which moron did that to the franchise?

The Graphics in the trailer are amazing.

Personally i think this could be an interesting development.

Well, i have to agree with Jan in general about recent developments in Star Trek (must not think about reboot!) but as this is just for a game then i think you have to accept that they are not making a Trek RPG or adventure game here.  Looks more like a combat oriented game.

If you are going to bitch about this then you may as well not play Armada/Fleet Ops... its just pure combat, allows very strange alliances, and diplomacy doesn't really come into it unless making tactic agreements with other players during an alliances game (which are not so popular).

Still, i had to laugh at : "It will offer a deep gaming experience," said Christian Braun, Executive Producer with Gameforge.

Yeah, they have been saying that since the days of Jetpac.

peace is good, but makes boring video games.

Look ma, no shields!

I'll be sticking with Fleet Ops, especially considering the scope of the next patches :)

Star Trek Online showed that a game concept based on pure war action is likely to fail with the name "Star Trek" on it. The problem is not that those games are about war. The problem is WHY it's war and HOW that war rose up.

It more and more looks like that all Trek related stuff recently - ergo through the relaunch - has been intentionally turned into a war fest. There is no story related reason for that - it is just set as a Paramount set fact for reasons that doesn't need an explanation. To turn into reality and the investment that floated into the relaunch of the franchise, there is an explanation: Mainstream, Cash, Marketing.
Apart from the movie, Star Trek Games are part of that particular relaunch concept. There is no game that goes it's own ways but the one given by Paramount. The concept shines through ST XI, STO, Legacy, this browser game.

What do you find more interesting as a game:

1. Exploration (feeling) spiced with battle for the sake of self defence or even preventive war action
2. Instant Total War for the sake of self defence (cos the Klingons are suddenly against Federation or Nero Almighty changed the previous history line)

I know it's a really slight difference - but this difference makes it for me. Why don't they follow Option 1 philosophy? It's also good for mainstream and fits the needs of a Trek fan. People love well thought out storylines.
Still Paramount favours Option 2. Why? Because it's much easier to produce and more cost efficient. Applyable on all sort of platforms (CIN, TV, PC, CONS, BROWSERS, etc.) in a much easier way. Profit maxima. Sooner or later there will be noone out there who bothers about Trek because it was nothing more than an entertainment bitch for a while. the crazy thing for me is that there's more money going into it than ever before but the quality story wise dropped at least about 50%. Instead they try to cover this up with action and special effects.

OMG.... do I become old?

This make me laugh because the trailer was really good but its a browser game...

Game might be turn base but they make the trailor totaly unrelated haha

I seriously hope the game is in some way like that trailer.  Even if it is turnbased and those are just action sequences.  I actually think I like that better than STO just by the looks of the trailer.  Total war over the mmo exploration game.  And its free!

I just wanna blow stuff up! :woot:

Theres no such thing as too high. :woot:

I just want to get epic battles in FO where the ships don't stop to shoot.  I want flybys, hit and runs, circleing, ect.  :whistling:  If we could get that in FO, then who needs thin new junk.

finally watched the trailer, it kinda annoys me. the real game isnt gonna be anything like that. so the trailer shouldnt have even been made.

The trailer isn't meant to be like the game, it only gets attention. Standard marketing tactic.

I've seen a music video that claimed Star Trek would have been the better series to call 'Star Wars', looking back at the most games, they seem to agree. As Picard once said "Does anyone remember when we used to be explorers?"

Am I the only one who thinks the guy doing the voice over is overacting the part?

im studying marketing  :woot:

if this were a product advertisement that misrepresented the product so badly the ASA would flatten it.

i hate product misrepresentation.

Epic visuals, but horrible fact checking. Since when can a Bird of Prey one-shot a Galaxy?!? And since when can Galaxys pull off hair-pin maneuvers. On top of that, the engine sound on the Defiant was horrendous, like something out of Star Wars.

 :guns:

Yeah, every once and a while you just want to blow something up and not care about which combination of ships will be most efficient or which special to use first.
