Because 0.57% of american GDP is a huge investment will make all the difference.

I don't think this would come in at cost, i think he underestimates what it would cost to build this (even if it were possible).
also a quote from his site about what to do with the giant lazor planned for the ship:
Because the public want light shows.
also a quote from his site about what to do with the giant lazor planned for the ship:
On the 4th of July the Enterprise can fly over the US with its laser energized for shooting streaks of bright light across the night sky – a kind of fireworks from space. Upon request, this could be done over other nations on special occasions too.
Because the public want light shows.

But for some moon and mars missions it's way too huge, and will be way too expensive.
The idea of building an Enterprise with 900m length in the next 20 years is as likely as a Star Wars fan building a death star. Not going to happen...
LOL who said anything about building it in space? that's a whole new ball game, 20 years? we could construct something like in space for another 300 at least.
That would have to be built on the ground and as i said we don't have any tech that could make that fly within atmosphere.
Just a stupid dream.
However the American government did invest alot of money in trying to kill people with the power of thought lmao Hense the movie men who stare at goats hahaha. So maybe this isnt so bizarre.

America has probably spent money on things that make attempting this today sane by comparison...

i think continued spending on cold war era nuclear deterrents (by all nuclear powers) make this idea sound sane.

to say that things are not going to change and that high goals are unreachable... will make them not change and stay unreachable.
If all people would be fair, that wouldn't even matter! xP But this humans kinda like to see thousands suffer to get rich.

well in any case i still think unmanned probes is still the best bang for your buck, and in the end there is no real reason to send people into deep space atm. robots can perform most of the research that they wish to do. .........and on a side note perhaps they should finish the international space station.

The Project Orion with nuclear propulsion system could be developed someday, much faster than building the Enterprise. We have difficulties to build a spaceship capable to visit our stellar neighborhoods - Alfa Centauri, located 4 light years away. If the Daedalus ship is possible to be build, than we can rich Alfa Centauri in almost 50 years. Nearly half of human life. We need to expend the human life to 150 years to can travel to Alfa Centauri and we need some kind of electromagnetic shield to protect our ship from the deadly radiations. Such a ship like the Orion or the Daedalus can be build in almost 20 years using the ISS for a space-yard or we can transport all the materials to our Moon and build our ship there, or much more easy to develop the space industry on the Moon and construct our space rocket there. Launching the spaceship from the Moon is much more easy, because there is no atmosphere :-)

Heres the costs from said website. NOT guna happen.

Great idea but not viable in any way. The world economy I crap enough as it is and for those pennies it would have to be a world wide project, I don't see a federation anywhere.

I could see building something smaller than it. Just for testing to see if building something bigger would be worth while at this point but i dont see the enterprise itself being built either.
I also agree that this would have to be world wide which unless something very different happens in the world its not gonna happen any time soon.

I've read the Chinese sent their first woman to space these days and they want to build their own space station. Perhaps the Enterprise could be their next step

If he really wants to do some trek in space for real this would be a more reallistic Gen 1 ship
