Tie between Picard (the child-hating smart one) and The Sisko (the one who punched Q).

picard, just about beats sisko.
his brain is the best thing about him, even if he got his arse kicked by the old guy in generations.

Picard, the smartest diplomat. I guess it's why they gave him the big chair.

Captain Sulu.
Kirk was too cocky, picard a strange mix of british/french, sisko too aggressive, janeway got lucky with her crew and Archer was a nitwit.
The only captain worthy is Sulu

Janeway for me. Voyager is my favorite series. Kirk is in close second though. Picard is to ambassadorial and Sisko is to whiny, especially when Bajor is involved. Archer, of course didn't deserve to be captain. He was a pilot for goodness sake. H was only captain because his father invented the new warp engines.
If we are going for mentioned captains though, Tucker gets my vote. Or maybe Riker. Paris?

I think we have to split Picard into "TNG Picard" and "First Contact Picard". Picard in the first seasons of TNG and up until Generations almost was "Look a Battleship! Right, conference everyone" and they talked their enemies to death. After being assimilated, well he became much more of a hard ass and quite understandably so.
I have to admit, you make a point Andre. Sulu was a very well balanced captain. I also think Spock was excellent in command, but I imagine most vulcans are. And Janeway, yeah, hmm,
In a way though you have to give it to Kirk post-Khan though. If it wasn't for him breaking the rules, Earth wouldn't have survived. I guess that's sort of where Picard got that rogue streak from too (after meeting Kirk).
That's the paradox though, Starfleet (despite claiming it isn't, it IS a ranked and military organisation) desires officers like Styles; disciplined, obeys orders, understands the chain of command etc. but, it actually needs loose cannons like Kirk or Picard (or Riker when he gets the chance) to do what needs to be done even when it might fly in the face of what others consider the "right" thing to do. The challenge of command I guess

According to Picard, Starfleet wants officers that can think for themselves and don't blindly follow orders. They sure seem to support people knowing when not to obey orders, considering the crap officers keep pulling and not losing their job for it.
It just annoys them.

Well there's Decker.. When Chuck Norris goes to sleep he checks his closet first to make sure Matt Decker isn't in there.
Wesley on the Lexington was good too, but Kirk wins, 1st season before they got all hippy/loopy..

Man I think all the captains have something about them I liked alot. But ultimately I have to go with Picard, he has some of the best characteristics of a captain. He knows how to make you have a bad day, I wouldnt want to piss him off. Its pretty hard to get the best of Picard. And for all the people that say hes too diplomatic, yeah he definately talks first and shoots second, yet if it comes down to it, hes not afraid to pull the trigger. Like when the Romulans ambushed him at theIconian homeworld, he brough in his backup and basically told Tomolok, lets dance. And I loved the scene where he punked out that dude that used the dimentional transporter to beam onto the Enterprise bridge. Bottom line is, Picard has some serious kahonas, I wouldnt mess with him.

Well, as my Username suggests, Picard is my favorite captain (as long as we talk about main characters), mainly because Patrick Stewart is a great actor.
Kirk is fine too, but always seemed a bit ... well... cheesy, like the whole Original Series.
Sisko is okay, but just not that interesting, and the whole Bajor-Messias plot was a bit stupid.
Janeway is annoying, especially in the later seasons.
Archer is as dull as the whole series, easily the worst of all Star Trek captains.
Including other captains, I always thought Captain Pike was awesome - the one in the original Pilot as well as the one in the new Movie.
The already mentioned Sulu was great, too.

It's honestly a 3 way tie between Kirk, Sulu and Sisko all three are badass. I still wish we could get an Excelsior series with a captan Sulu.
I want Sulu sword fighting klingons damnit!
