I'm afraid so... I really don't expect much from this movie... Abrams may be good at making action movies, but I somehow doubt he has even the slightest notion about what Star Trek is meant to be... :ermm:

EDIT: By the way, I cannot, for the life of me, see Karl Urban as McCoy, can you? I mean, I know they're supposed to be younger versions of the TOS characters, but he's not even American! I mean, some of their choices look OK (Bruce Geenwood actually looks something like Jeffrey Hunter and therefore might do a passable Christopher Pike), but why pick a New Zelander, who doesn't even look like DeForest Kelly, to play as a Southern American? How is that meant to make sense?

Didn't Roddenberry establish cannon that the enterprise WAS built on the ground? there is a picture floating around the net that shows the enterprise being built by afew machines as well.

Well I didn't know that, but the NX 02 Columbia was built (at least, when it neared completion anyway) in orbit... so I went with that...

But still, why have the got people standing on the hull and welding by hand? Please don't tell me our industry isn't going to change one bit in 250 years... :pinch:

Mabye it has, for all we know all the parts were replicated. There just putting the finishing touches on her. And we don't know if those are welding it. People from afew hundred years ago could not tell the difference between a torch from back then and a modern one thats puts things together. Mabye there are using something to put armor plating, or some kind of conductive material onto her.

welding by hand looks cooler then welding by machines. thats why - Star Trek finally reached it's final frontier:: generic Hollywood Cinema (even more than before)

Yea, the average Starfleet Captain will be one of the following:
The cool and smart average guy with good intentions
The even cooler guy with darkened sunglasses and a hang to make dark secrets and nasty plans
A girl with a uniform not much different to other peoples underwear

and of course they will wear big powning plasma guns instead of phasers
not to forget the new visible rocket-launcher-like missle packs on the vessels

If we are lucky we will get an "Alien versus Picard" film someday. Hurray!  :woot:

:crybaby:

"Alien vs. Picard" is good;
I think Picard will win by quoting shakespeare all the time and therefore forcing the nimble alien mind do explode.

Picard, Patric Stuart is getting up their. Maybe the next movie will be Picard VS the arthritis.  :wheelchair:

Last I herd was if they casted him a gin that he should not have to stand to long in any situation let alone a action seen.

Well why not Sisko (if the writers can think of a clever way to bring him back from the Prophets) or Janeway vs Alien then?

Actually, though, last I heard, Shatner's still in pretty good shape for his age (and is still on TV in Boston Legal), which is nice...
