Name of the Ferengi Empire
What's your favourite episode? How is romulan ale brewed? - Star Trek in general :-)

The Ferengi Financial Empire is called the Ferengi Alliance, does anyone know what exactly what it is an alliance of?
I mean, they can't have too many genuine allies and the Ferengi themselves are constantly at each others wallets...

Politically, I'd assume that it's an alliance of Ferengi. The Ferengi Alliance is more of a political entity than a trade one, I think.

If you consider Birth of the Federation canon then the Ferengi Alliance refers to various private corporations contributing finances to the (
) Ferengi Military.

IIRC, in TNG the Ferengi military were no laughing matter.
And yes, I seem to recall that the "alliance" was a corporate one.

Yeah I know the Ferengi military is rather effective, they were my favorite side in BotF. I just find it funny that such a... funny race is capable of assembling such an effective war machine. Quark had that effect on me I guess...
But back on subject, I think Dark Thanatos has it pretty much spot on. The Alliance refers to all the various Ferengi corporations, businesses, and private enterprises being loosely tied under one banner. I think Ferengi Confederation might be more fitting though...

Yeah.
The Grand Negus didn't help either.
Or their prejudice for clothed fe-males.
As for Confederation vs Alliance, Corporations are usually less territory oriented, so "alliance" makes more sense.

Don't be deceived by their appearance. The idea behind the Ferengi actually was to have a race in Star Trek which is kinda equal to current humans: The neverending greed for profit with or without lethal force. They are well aware of deception and how to fight if it somehow turns out to be of profit. ^-^

When they invented the Ferengi in TNG they ought to be new klingons, so a new enemy... then they realized that they were too funny and invented the Borg
.
The Ferengi-Alliance unites quite a few Starsystems, though. I would regard it as a financial alliance, though, like the EU, the Ferengi work together in terms of trade and warfare, but that's it, the rest is private.

The initial idea of having them as an enemy-replacement doesn't apply anymore since they got their final style in TNG and especially the DS9-writing staff worked their "culture" out in their show.

Well, that's what I said, didn't I? Ferengi didn't fit as enemies so they invented the Borg, Ferengi became in DS9 a mirror of today's western society.

Yes, ultimately they come to contrast with the socio-economic-political utopian image of the Federation which has long since stopped relying on money and has invented the replicator so it can make just about anything one could ever need. The Ferengi are greedy and materialistic, eager to sell you something, their society revolves around capitalism and represents the epitome of such a culture. They are indeed meant to represent our current capitalist society, which is not quite like theirs but which clearly revolves around capitalism (something which I find most unfortunate and which I believe will be our ultimate doom).

Heh, I know this is going to start a political argument(so please don't read into this statement)
I just have to say that The ferengi are just greedy and selfish. They may have been capitalists at one point, but have gon way past that onto just pure greed. Our society is only about 2/3 capitalist at the moment(I doubt even that) so I wouldn't compare anyone to the Ferengi
unless it was meant as insult(Not that I'm saying you were being insulting). No one is that bad :p...except maybe Bill Gates
Oh any why, might I ask, do you think that Capitalism will be the "Ultimate Doom" of our society? (Crap I did it again)

I believe it is quite safe to say that the Ferengi were more created as a caricature, rather than a direct imitation.
