Sure you can, but why would you? Eventually you will get bored and do the really fun stuff such as mirror universe events, ker'rat pvp's and other stuff which will periodically bring a big smile on your face as you gloat over the misfortune of your enemies and get good "currency" as you do it!
I used to hate pvp but now its become the highlight of my day!

Sort of ...maybe if your flyign around your going to bump into someone and have ti fight since the galaxy is at war, romulans are pist about their homeworld blowing up, the borg are here and want to assimilate everything and the klingons want to expand their territory so you will have to fight some what and that means leveling up.

Leveling up itself isn't to be feared. This isn't Oblivion afterall.
Or you meant grinding, in which case I don't think STO is that much like WoW, but I could be wrong.

Yes, there is a way:
Do the exploration-missions. You will be sent to clusters which spawn random unexplored systems to carry out missions in (supply-delivery, aid attacked vessels - you can drop those missions and escape the attackers while not dropping the exploring-mission itself- and several other small mission-types). By doing this you will get a lot of opportunities to scan anomalies, which will deliver you material for crafting - another non-combat element of the game. Just visit the memory-alpha-system to have a look (there is a tutorial-mission for that on low-level).
And btw, I am playing several different games. There are some games I play through and then never play again, and some games (like FO) are on my list of games I will always like to play then and there and I can always participate in whenever I wish. STO is on that list, too, so a monthly fee would hurt me a lot because I don't play it every day while F2P doesn't grant me attractive bonuses. Lifetime-subscriptions are the compromise and I like the general idea of it.
