DS9/Babylon 5 conspiracy FAQ

What's your favourite episode? How is romulan ale brewed? - Star Trek in general :-)

From what I know, DS9 and B5 ran around at the same time. That would probably have something to do with the complaints. Memory Alpha claims the fans started it, unlike Quatre's Wikipedia quote claming it was the director.

Despite my earlier post lambasting the series, I actually watched quite a bit of babylon 5 and enjoyed it somewhat. I just thought DS9 was much better.

@ Tyler

If memory server me, they ran concurrently, at least for a little while.  ^-^

A thread full of opinions.

How about some facts: JMS wrote Babylon 5 ten years prior to it being produced. He presented it to Paramount when he was trying to get it made. They turned it down, and immediately began production on DS9.

Back to opinion: A lot of people have this almost-religious devotion to Star Trek, but Rick Berman and Paramount are hardly saints. They're in it to make money, and if they come across a good money-making idea, they go for it.

Babylon 5 blew the walls away from sci-fi, and expanded the horizons of things by orders of power, and yet it gets attacked by Trekkies constantly, claiming it "stole" from DS9. Wrong way round, guys.

Arguments tend to work a little better when you don't create your own opposing side to fight... I don't see any claims about Babylon 5 stealing from Star Trek. The talk here is about the superficial similarities, several of which aren't even similar.

Aye, I've never understood fanboi-ism. You like it or you don't, you like both or you don't. I have been a long time star trek fan, I've watched every series and grew up with it (the fact there is no SAT TV show on the air right now is weird.. there's always been one on since I've been alive >.>). DS9 is probably among my favorite of  the series, right next to TNG. Having said that, I also love B5 and the way it tells one connected over arching story for five years. I don't think I've seen any other show do as well in tieing together a cogent narative (not that their weren't issues obviously..).

G'kar is one of my favorite TV character's of any show (RIP Andreas Katsulias), and Londo among the most tragic. (in my mind though B5 ended after season 5, Excalibur was beyond horrible and the weird religious tone the "lost tales" took on was just.. sad)

Hmm, point taken, apologies guys. I've just seen so many digs at Babylon 5 by Star Trek fanboys, claiming B5 stole from DS9...
