I think the Future Wars mod Gamer was talking about is for Star Trek Armada 2, but I could be wrong.  As for Sins of a Solar Empire, I doubt it (the sins mod) would work with patch 1.04, because usually mods are made to work with the latest version, as is my experience with mods for that game.  I could be wrong, though.

seeing as how you really dont have a choice but to update the game (unless you get creative and search certain seeder sites)

Think I have to get creative.

The Mod is v1.14 to 1.81 or so.

I tried the Future Wars Mod. Tis fun but not quite FO :). I find that the combat is quite action packed (it reminds me more so of Star Wars or the latest Star Trek film as oppose to traditional Star Trek). I played as the Federation and Borg. there are very few canon ships in Future Wars (a given, considering that this is 100 years after DS9) but the fan made ships are quite well made for the most part. The mod overall does have a more professional finish than most most mods, although I'd say it lags behind FO in that respect as well.

I'm not too sure about the balance though. I played a few games against the AI and yes gamer is correct in so much as you need a REALLY huge fleet to take on a well defended base. Not just 3 or 4 groups of 16. I'd wager over 100 ships at least for a moderately defended base. Now if you had two turtles playing, you'd probably need to double that number and pump out reinforcements regularly to punch through. It just get's too confusing at times to see what's going on :).

I didn't like the Borg so much. I had myself a Tactical Fusion Cube and the tooltip said that you're practically guaranteed victory so I sent it into battle with a few Tactical cubes as cover but alas; I was most disappointed when the Romulan Stabase and turrets hailed it with what looked to be a thousand torpedoes, thereby draining it's shields and hull within 25 seconds. I think the Borg are just too cumbersome and just don't seem to have the edge like the FO Borg do (plus they're blue :S).

I'm going to keep it installed for a bit to try out the other races and see what's what :). The Romulans look interesting so I'll try them next.

Future Wars? Tested it, too. To me, it's too near to stock Armada 2 in general, I just enjoyed some of the music (at least I know they tried to make it a little epic) and otherwise I literally felt the lack of innovation during playing. It's the same old "build as lots of ships as you can and overpower your enemy."
Also disappointing, but not necessarily important for judging the mod itself: The voiceacting for the intro and campaigns (if you skip it or don't understand german, it's easy to ignore that I guess). I'm sure the mod team did best by the given tools and voices they had, but it's nevertheless executed awfully for a game. Personally I would have spoken myself and more like a starfleet officer who's interested in 24th century history for the intro and the fed campaign, for the Klingons I would have invented some friends of mine and for Borg... well. If talking about talking like a Borg authentically, I'm the noob myself then :P

I have to agree with RedEyedRaven. After playing the future wars mod for a good several hours and then jumping to FO 3.1... Future Wars just comes off as another stock A2 clone. FO feels like a completely different game, where's FW still has that rushed feeling of A2 that I don't like. It really is just another mindless "spam the biggest ship and send the biggest fleet to the enemy base." Every ship feels the same and once you can make battleships the smaller ships are completely useless. FO still manages to make every ship useful with their special abilities, so once the Battleships come into play it's still more effective to continue making destroyers and cruisers. Unless I'm the Dominion I rarely even use battleships in FO, and to be honest I really like that because it shows just how useful individuals ships are. Future Wars does have some things going for it, like the epic music (the Klingon track in particular is amazing... those bells of doom are just fantastic), and overall I like the setting and the designs for most of the ships, but as far as execution it's just stock A2 with a new coat and a pretty installer.

Fleet Ops is still the best, and probably always will be the best mod for A2
