Borg power source???
What's your favourite episode? How is romulan ale brewed? - Star Trek in general :-)

Anyone have any idea how or what the borgs power source is/could be- ever read any tech manuals, fan fiction or books which give any explaination? I know nothing of their power source but assume it's not unlimited due to them reserving power by not using enormous shield grids for their massive ships and just bulking up their hull.

Borg tech is largely unknown, even outside of the series.

Borg use shields on their ships, but it's more of a containment field.

the borg probably could generate shields like fed ships if they wanted, but it might not be efficient for them to do it. or their tech might interfere with shield tech.

*sigh* Ever since Starfleet Command III, I've been hearing this 'borg don't have shields' stuff over and over and over. The show (TNG, DS9, and Voyager) expressly says otherwise. Though once they were called 'energy fields' by Geordi.
They just don't turn them on unless they are needed. That way there's not an unneeded constant drain of power, instead just a drain when useful. Plus, getting hit by the weapon makes it easy to analyze exactly what it does, so that the next shot meets a perfectly adapted shield and accomplishes absolutely nothing.

Actually, what they do is keep a shield around important parts of the ship and only them. Similar to Enterprise having a shield around the Warp Core.
The only ship-wide shield they use is the Structural Integrity Field.

All we know for sure is that the power source is less powerful than the Omega particle.
As far as shields, well remember in "Q Who?" when they fired photons and did no damage? Aan adapted shield like what silent described. Games remove adapted shields for balance purposes I think (no-damage adapted shields would devastate the other races.) I have never heard this stuff about only important parts of the ship, their ships are important all-around. The whole idea of Borg ship design is to spread things out so it's decentralized.

The bit about having shields only around important places comes from Voyager, with the Tactical Cube using 'multi-regenerative security fields' to protect the central plexus.
No Borg ship has ever shown conventional shields aside from the SIF, even in battle.

Internal security fields, not shields.

Regardless of where it is, a force field is a still a shield. The bubble around a ship is a force field, the Brig uses force fields, the Warp Core is protected by a force field.
The only difference is that some are inside, some are outside.

borg power source = matrix
they just use the drone's energy to power the ship! xD why do you think all the borg go into their mini cell thingy when they are "regenerating" but that doesn't explain why the drones need energy.. hmm...

The drones need energy to keep the robot parts working, which then keep the organig parts working. I believe it was said in TNG.
I'm assuming it was a serious post, since Internet hates sarcasm and humor.

Yeah, in the episode where they first met Hugh, it was mentioned that he has to recharge in order for the technology to feed the meat.
Yes, that does imply that the borg can do straight energy->matter replication. The production of everything a drone needs to continue its work off nothing but power. And since Hugh did fine and dandy without an alcove, with nothing but a wall outlet installed in the brig to feed him? That means there was no reason for Voyager's cargobay to be converted with those Borg alcoves.

The shields could be molded to the ship's shape. Strange how it seems that you guys only know about spherical shields.

Voyager showed full shields, TNG and DS9 did not for the Borg - TNG expressly called them electromagnetic shields that prevented beam in too.
