Any thoughts on what the Breen look like?

What's your favourite episode? How is romulan ale brewed? - Star Trek in general :-)

I've been reading Typhon Pact: Zero Sum Game and apparently the Breen are a coalition of different races that only wear those suits to disguise their true racial identity from each other? So far I've got a kind of 1984 esque vibe from David Mack's explanation, anyone else dissapointed by the Breen's portrayal in this book? This is my first post in a forum so I apologize if it's not to etiquette, just curious to see what other peoples thoughts are on this!

hello and welcome to the forum azriel, hope you enjoy your time here.

there is nothing wrong with your post, this subforum is for any discussion on star trek, which this post fits well with.

we should ask kira what the breen look like, she twice beat the crap out of them and stole their cold suits to pretend to be breen. she should know.

weyoun said that their planet isnt even cold, so maybe they look like us, and just wanna be scary.

Yes, welcome.

Kira would know if we assume she didn't just steal it from a locker, though she I wouldn't be surprised if she would still beat one up anyway...

Weyoun said hot, Cardassian Embassy on the homeworld said cold... I wonder if Weyoun is going from intel or actually being there, did he mention visiting?

That discrepancy in detail could be a case of the book getting it right, they're a collation of races.

That or it could be DS9 flubbing continuity again (tho I think DS9 was within its own rights one of the best trek series for continuity).

i think weyoun said it was quite temperate meaning ok

Well, for Cardassians the Breen homeworld may be very cold since they aren't used to those temperatures. Whereas Weyoun could be better suited due to changes in his genes. Vorta have a very pale skin, perhaps they come from a cold world as well.

You know, the planet could be locked(I forget the actual term) with one side twards the sun where one side was extremely cold while the other was hot.

Of course, my reasoning is always that maybe it is a nomral planet like ours where some places are hot and some are cold.  Or even seasons.  In any case, you can't judge a planet by one weaons experienced when you don't even know where on the planet he/she visited.  As I said, maybe it was simply a desert on the breen homeworld the vorta went to. Or the cardies only saw the polar regions.

It's rumored (and I think highly true) that the Breen are Star Trek's take on the Ubese of Star Wars Return of the Jedi fame.  Very loosely of course...

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ubese

As for the books, nothing from them is canon per-say, so it's very hit or miss on what's going to be thrown onto a screen that will contradict it.  But given no new Star Trek eps are going to be airing anytime soon, and the movie franchise is likely locked around TOS era stuff, I'd say it's a fair bet to put a little bit more faith into the books for the time being.  Though personally I don't like this suggested take on the Breen, it's really just like a lot of people, we've all come to draw are own conclusions on what/how the Breen are/look.  Theirs really a lot to draw from though, even just looking at these other posts on how to perceive what the Cardassians think of the Breen homeworld vs what the Dominion thinks and why.  Another take I can add comes from the linear notes on Memory Alpha about why the suit was made to look the way it does.

"When the Breen helmets were being designed for "Indiscretion", it was decided that they would give viewers the suggestion of a snout, like that of an Arctic Wolf."

If I were to go based on the shapes of the helms I'd probably say snouted reptile (unless their homeworld truely is frozen, then snouted mammal). Based on several non-canon sources I've read that they are Mollusks, much like slugs (would explain them not having blood). My hopes are that they are insectoid though.
