Well, using hunting rifles is restricted to hunting grounds... I took that for granted. ;)

And concerning the self protection thing: It's more difficult in Germany than in the US because they handle it very restrictive. You have to proof that you're more endangered than other people and even then it's often denied. Mostly it's money transporters, body guards and perhaps private investigators. Not just anyone.

Hunting is easier. If you have your hunting license, you will most certainly get your weapon license, as well. Of course the hunting license includes all the training needed.

And the use of sports weapons is also restricted on licenced shooting ranges.

There are different kinds of licenses. Different levels. The full license (for body guards for example) is the rarest.

Sports licenses are most common as almost every town has a shooting club (a tradition that is several centuries old and based in the idea to train citizens to protect their own city... now it's just a sports and community thing).

And hunting licenses also rather common, as hunting is also an old tradition. You just need enough money and be someone or know someone owning a hunting ground.

Nevertheless, Germany is well known for it's strict weapons laws.
Being shot is a very rare type of death here. Also murders are much less than most people think. It's just that murder is much more "interesting" to the news.

But it's much less of this kind of news on TV than on some "action news" programs in the US.

(I hope I make any sense to you. :D)

"strict weapons laws" is an understatement. Heck, they even outlawed Laser Quest!

Guess thats why first person shooter games are a big hit in Europe because thats the closest to shooting a gun that most people will ever get!! :P

Well, there always is military service. ;)
I did my 10 months and got to shoot pistols, assault rifles and machine guns. :)

And as I said, you can still join the shooting clubs, if you want.

Wow, ten months is all that is required? Military service is not mandatory in the US, but if you do choose to go in it is usually for at least four years (more for certain disciplines).

Well... meanwhile they shortened it to 9 months.
It used to be 18 months many years ago and was constantly shortened.

The basic training is still 2 months.
Then follows special training in guarding and securing (2 weeks)
After that you get special training of 1 month for the position you're assigned to.

The rest is just... well, you do your job for the rest of the time and that's it.

And yes, it has to do with the fact that it's mandatory.
Except if you're not accepted because of health reasons or
if you can proof that you can't do it because of your conscience (ethical reasons).
If the latter is the case, you have to do an alternative civil service.

I think there are three reasons, why it's that short:

- They don't want to "steal" several years of your time,
which you could use for education.

- It's expensive to pay you for several years.

- The new recruits wouldn't have enough to do, if the old ones were still at service. The mandatory service exists to train enough people so they have extras when needed (thus, raising the overall size of the armed forces). That would be in question if everyone had to stay that long, taking away positions for the following recruits.

Of course, if you want to do it as a real job, you have to stay longer.
Minimum is 2 years, for officers it used to be 12 years, I'm not sure if it is still that way. When you sign for several years, your payment improves from the first day, as it's your new job, not a duty the country demands of you.

The payment for those who do the basic service only (those 10 months) is rather a compensation than payment. But at least you get food and living for free. :)

PS: Oops... gone pretty off-topic, hm? :D

The US isn't anywhere close to requiring mandatory military service (thankfully)

Why not? They aren't going to hurt you if you go to the range with someone responsible.
