LoL, if you want me to come back on that comment and start flaming america fine, you guys can't care anymore because despite having an ok team, you can't make it out of the group stage (campare it to the NBA, first theres a league, and then theres the "playoffs, where you win to go through if you lose, your out, unless you lose the semi finals you play in the match for 3rd place))
ad for all those people agruing bout rooney and ronaldo, its all because of Sven, his 4-1-4-1 system is totally not englands style england is a 4-4-2 team AND GERMANY IS GOING OT WIN, and i have to laugh so much that france beat brazil, lol in my eyes i'm half satisfyed, only a european team can win now, although ill be very unhappy if france win. And btw unlike the "superbowl" this tournament is held once every four years, 1.6 billion people are watching it LIVE(theres 6.5 billion people in the world, calculate how many of these people actually have a TV and you get pretty much any , i wonder how many others are watching it on replays because of time difference, anyhoes, all the amaericans care about is being scared, if you watch the news in america you can tell they're scared about something (can't post racist comments here)

Soccer is a strange abbreviation of "Association Football" if I remember it right.
I believe the word was used to differentiate from other football-like games in
the early times after the rules for football as we know it now were written down.
The name Association Football is still around, for example in "FIFA".
FIFA = Fédération Internationale de Football Association
Edit: Yep, I was right. Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia article:

Edit: Yep, I was right. Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia article:
The rules of football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The term soccer first appeared in the 1880s as a slang abbreviation of Association football, often credited to Charles Wreford-Brown.[18]
Today the sport is known by a number of names throughout the English-speaking world, the most common being football and soccer. The term used depends largely on the need to differentiate the sport from other codes of football followed in a community. Football is the term used by FIFA, the sport's world governing body, and the International Olympic Committee. For more details of naming throughout the world, please refer to the main articles above.

lol I was hoping someone would take the bait.

Here goes nothing. First, if you're trying to insult us, bad try, because none of us care what you wackos in Europe think. If you're trying to insult our soccer team, just look at your "NFL Europe". Compared to the original NFL, you're a pathetic joke, almost a mockery.
Also, the NBA comptes every year, which means we get trophies faster. Plus, since its all in the US (with a few notable exceptions in Canada) basketball is much less likely to start an international war (which, if my memory serves me, has happened on at least one occasion in soccer).
The entire nature of American sports differ from Europe in the fact that ours is simply more organized. We work of a schedule and follow it like clockwork.
Oh, and we dont care how many people watch the sports events, what we care about is that the superbowl matters to us in fact and tradition, while the world cup has no bearing on us whatsoever.

You produce a lot of hot air, indeed.
The difference between America and Europe is that Amercia always feels to be in some kind of competition. Why?
I thought isolationism was outdated...
We love football, you love your sports. Every culture has it's tradition and there is no need that everyone has to like the same things. So calm down, if possible.
And if I wanted to participate in the competion, I would just quote another Wikipedia article:
So what?

German Football Association
The national association is the DFB (Deutscher Fußball-Bund or German Football Association) headquartered in Frankfurt.
The DFB was founded in 1901 in Leipzig, by the representatives of 86 clubs. Today, the association has some 26,000 member clubs which field 170,000 teams with over 2 million active players: these numbers include 870,000 female members and 8,600 female teams. The DFB is the world's largest sports federation with over six million members.
So what?
