Because they are both shitty, yet dominate the market to the point I have never had any experience with their competition, I have no preference.

For what reason do you say they are shitty? They dominate the market for a reason, they make the best chipsets. One thing to keep in mind if you have a bad experiance with a card, neither company actually MAKES the cards, they just make the chipsets, there are many graphics card manufacturers out there, and they are more responsible for quality of the product then ATI or Nvidia.

Why? Well as far as ATI goes: ATI drivers for Linux kinda made me unable to get past the login screen on that linux installation. I have had Nvidia issues as well, but not sure whether that was due to the drivers or not.
Also, free market doesn't always work out so well, quality is only one of many ways to dominate a market, and once on top you don't need to keep quality up as long as your limited competition doesn't get ahead much.

Yeah kinda the issue with ATI/AMD + Linux, They make crappy drivers for Linux where as nVidia do really good drivers.
but both of those companies are scum, How many times do they put out refreshes based on the same chipset that does nothing for performance but costs 2x as much.
Also for all the nVidia lovers go Google the Geforce 5 FX series.
Neither of the companies are good, Your just forced to use one or the other because Intel Integrated Graphics aren't anywhere as good as Larabee claimed.

Thats because officially ati and nividia do not support linux, the drivers are made by 3rd partys just like the sound drivers.

Actually you will find you can get Official nvidia drivers from their site. Same goes for ATI.

i prefer nvidia because i got a shitload of trouble with the ATI drivers, since i use a ATI card.
They are quite unstable and support no 16-Bit Z-Buffer which makes it impossible to play some older games (Mechwarrior 3 as example). Had a Nvidia card before, no trouble at all there.
We know that both companies do shit, but the buffer problem from ATI exists since years now, and wont get ever fixed (wish i would have known that before buying the card)

For someone who's not a computer guy and hates doing troubleshooting, I've found Nvidia to be far easier to use and much more reliable. But then again I'm just happy that I know where the power button is.

nVidia all day every day. More stable, more cooperative, and run slightly cooler in my opinon.

Generally, but that more depends on what company made the card.
I go with nVidia. I have had some real bad experiences in the past with ATI, and have been un-impressed with their gaming level cards as compared to nVidia..
