here's a comic by the oatmeal, i like his stuff, this one is clever cos instead of taking a side in the windoze/macfac/linucks war he slaps them all for their shortfalls.

Yeah, use the Beard Force! lulz

Anyway, Linux is standard in our CS faculty (where I study). Our usual steps to be taken when you find your linux distro is no longer working: 1) Find a fellow student whose beard is equal or larger than your own. 2) Ask him. 3) Get cryptic response. 4) Ask again. 5) Let him hammer ~20 even more cryptic commands into your bash. 6) Stuff works again - but now everything looks funny. Explanation: "d00d, it's totally the new gtk+! BTW, why don't you try ArchLinux?"

...

I usally prefer to start with a hammer see if that fixes my problems but really rebooting solves all problems.

For Windows, if you're smart you only have programs and windows itself on the main drive. You'll have a secondary drive, a partition if you only have one physical drive to store data that isn't recoverable.

Plus every month or so you'll back up to either another PC, DVD, Flashdrive or to a web-server your files you really don't want to loose.

But yes to fix Windows, a re-install is always the best way. I have done like 3-4 in 2011 alone and we are only half way through May.

i like reinstalling windows a lot too. problem is you have to reinstall nearly every program because they love putting data in the registry.

i think it would be good if microsoft could make programs easier to back up, by allowing users to just copy the installation directory and the program will still work. ie have data that would usually go in the registry get put in a file in the installation's root directory. stuff like file associations could then be read from those files in 1 big search of all installed programs, and the registry restored after a wipe.
