symantec probably bought these positive reviews.
what i hate most is when computers come shipped with norton, its a pain in the arse to remove sometimes, its worse than a virus itself.
Ugh, removing Norton. One of the things I cannot stand in software is when my access to something is restricted on my own computer. When windows told me I couldn't delete Norton files since I didn't have permission I was furious. This is also why I haven't considered upgrading to Windows 7 for more than 30 seconds at a time.
Only way to get rid of Norton is by using a Norton Removal tool that you can download from Symantec; comes free with a one-time startup program that opens IE (not your default browser, but actually IE. I even disabled IE and it still somehow came up.) to ask you to consider reinstalling Norton. The only reason you're asked to restart after removal is so that Norton can be advertised to you after you've finally gotten rid of it.

I hate antiviruses too, at least the ones you pay for.
AVG lets you strip spyware, Spybot lets you monitor your registry, they're both free.
One thing though, Nebula: Windows 7 is the first windows OS in a long time that actually makes it EASIER to control your computer than its predecessors. It hasn't told me I wasn't allowed to access something since the day I got it and disabled user accounts. It's just XP and Vista you have to watch out for with that.

for windows 7 if u wanna delete files in the program files dir then u can use the context menu item to take ownership of them, then u will have control.
there were problems like this in vista too, but there was no fast way to take ownership.
also about uac i just turn it off, its not that useful.
i hate paying for av, thats why i dont
with norton that comes bundled, it wont appear in the windows program list (appwiz)
but your oem should give u an option to remove it, using a program made by your oem.

So, what if instead of the entire security center from Norton I just got portions, like anti-virus and anti-malware portions? Would that be better than get all the junk in between?

just uninstall all of norton. ur computer will thank you for it.
and use something better.
nod32 is what i use, its not free, but i dont pay. it also does anti malware and anti rootkits.
avg is average and free. and i think it covers malware too.
avast is free too i think
kaspersky isnt free but a lot of people say its also good.
windows vista/7 comes with a good enough firewall if u use the advanced mode. xp's firewall is ok if u have a NAT router. so dont bother downloading a firewall lol.
norton is by far the worst product. mcafee is also rather bad, as it takes so much system resources. and neither have that good detection rates.
microsoft recently released a free antivir, but i havnt tried it or heard anything about it.

AVG requires a subscription......
is there a good free (and I mean 100% free) Anti-Virus/Malware/spyware software?

google avg free, its a less advanced version of avg normal. by less advanced i presume there is no real difference other than making money
i used avg free for a while, its generally ok. way better than norton.
i've heard that avast is good.
i would try microsoft security essentials, its free and might be ok.
avira antivir is free and ok too.
try them all if u want.

While we are so off-topic, on the topic of AV, told a colleague about FO and he was excited to try it out as he is a big fan of A2. He tried it and said he couldn't play it as it ran too slowly. Said his machine must be too old. He was naturally disappointed because he said it looks like a good mod.
He informed me today, he can play! It was his anti-virus slowing things down so much. So, he is going to play a little against the AI to get a feel for the game and then hopefully he will join us all online!
