*COUGH COUGH* hard when they're placed next to the target you're after *COUGH* and also hard when 3 can be placed *COUGH COUGH*.
No one's engaging perimeter's with destroyers. Sucks to have a single station with artillery range completely remove destroyers from any battles that happen near them is my point.
*COUGH* :fish: <-- Perimeter + Destroyer phase of game.
So there, wise-ass

Enough with the coughing already

Perimeters can only be built after the second yard and then one must also upgrade them (I suppose your worried about the charges right?), they also take a very long time to build and one can only build 3. By that time you should have at least a few battleships ready, if you really want to destroy the perimeters.
Another way would be to not engage them until you have a big enough force available. Remember that these are stationary targets and there can only be 3 and take a long time to build. So chances are they will be built somewhere near your opponents base and certainly not anywhere near you (if they are, then scout better and destroy his con ship when its building).
If you are complaining about your opponent using perimeters as a fall back point when he's fighting you. Well the simple anwser is, dont follow his ships into perimeters range and most, they are stations after all.
Look, not trying to be a wise-ass or anything, there is no reason for your destroyers to be anywhere near a perimeter. Ok I can understand if you dont see them and you accidently stumble uppon them, but your destroyers will be able to escape in time if you can react fast enough. Just dont go near that place again.

This is my solution for those perimeters... CAPTURE THE HYPERSPACEARTILLERYSHIP! IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS TO CAPTURE THAT THING!

Easier said than done, plus they have to build it and it isn't exactly built in the destroyer phase of the game.

Better solution; play as Borg. The Tactical Cube would slaughter the Perimeters.

even better want to take out a perimiter just build a heap of exel II and some battleships, then a mountain if intrepids and as you attack send in the battleships first then the exel II's then use the intrepids Tricobalt torp, then call a warp in and hope to hell there is a steamrunner.

Or better... rank up the Excelsior IIs...
you get an Artillery range anyway...

Guys, you realise we are talking about perimteres in the destroyer phase of the game.
And Gamer, what is the advantage in Artillery range ExcelIIs against Perimeters?

For Destroyer phase, simply attack them Dominion-style; swarm them with the best warships you can get.

Then play as Risner and get Intrepids quicker

But that's just it. There are no perimeters in the destroyer phase (I'm assuming you mean early game) of the game.
And if some dufuss has climbed too quickly up the tech tree to get perimeter, then he has no ships.
At best, you could make them in the middle phase where you are building cruisers, but again, at the cost of ship building somewhere. Remember that the perimeter AT-charges are not player controlled. You can send a cruiser to trip the charges (and replace that cruiser after each attack so as not to lose it.) Once at low power, you can send your fleet in sans destroyers, or even with them, if you're paying attention to the special energy count.
Every race has access to vessels that can handily take take on Perimeters at the middle of the game. Feds have Mark-IIs, Akiras, and Remoores that can quickly take them down. Hurray for feds. :kid: Romulans can trip the charges and then send in generix support to shut all of the weapons down simultaneously while other ships burn down their defenses. Dominion can play the trip the charges game, then send in bombers who swing in, attack and use their special torpedo, retreat before the AT charge is up, repeat. The Klingons have a ship specially designed to drain special energy from a target! Who Knew!
Plus Vorchas can probably disable them for good, allowing your other ships to swing in and take them out. The Borg are like "What AT charges?"
I suppose you could control the special by playing with the autonomy buttons, but the counters listed above are still valid; ironically for everyone but the dominion. Of course, if they have a large yard, so do you, so you can just make C-17s with their arty beam and take them out. Or build a ketracel white facility and build Hyperspace Artilleries. Or build perimeters yourself.
I can see how you would get the two confused.
However, in an RTS, you must be thinking about the counters your race has to a given problem and how you can use them to your advantage. You might fail the first time you encounter something new, but it is your job to understand the vessels you have in the race you're playing and in the race you're playing against, and how they might be useful in different types of engagements.

But Mal, I didn't realize there was so much thinking to an RTS. I thought this was more like a point and click adventure game!

You're right Mal. After I posted that, I almost facepalmed at myself. Perimeters aren't exactly early in the game
