Terrain and map objects are critical elements of a good strategy game. Thus it should come as no surprise that for the past few years, Fleet Operations has expanded its background coding in order to enable many concepts that were previously considered impossible. While the next patch is not focused on map goodies, because of all the work required for the introduction of the faction redoes, we are already planning toward a large scale environment redo somewhere down the road. We are looking for your input, ideas or thoughts about what we have in mind! Tell us what you think!

Great ideas!!!
But there is something I was thinking about With the changes to scouting and moons that are normally inaccessible for miners, will there be a massive reduction of that, what yandonman is calling "Sneaky, sneaky expansion. I love that..."???
But besides that I think such changes will be great!!!

Awesome.
I think we should have asteroid belts that follow a path through the map. they would look like they are orbiting something, but you could put breaks in them so the map was constantly changing.

I don't think there will be. Imagine Duel II if there was another moon available to each player should they "break it open"

More the opposite. Some extra, inaccessible, moons will grant more sneaky expansions, and increase possible tactics and variety a lot - depends on map, and it's creator, of course, but at least there's the option (:

I thought that the developers were trying to take randomness out of the game. Yet all of these concepts (especially concept 3) add quite a bit of randomness into the game. Why?

They remove it, but also pioneer it so that people like me who come up with the crazyest stuff actualy have stock code support for the game. Randomnesss might be bad in general, but its still an option for those who want it.
EDIT: Question: Why does that Saber have 2 special abiltiys in that last pic?

I don't suppose I'll have to shoot through any Encapsulated Latinum Moons to get my Tritanium?

looks very interesting. remember that no matter what goodies they make for map objects, these will always be at the discretion of the map maker, so if something is too wild or imbalanced, then it doesn't have to be included. i think it's best to just add anything that can be added to map editor and see what map makers can make of them.

This is absolutely amazing. I can do so much with this, and yet it won't damage any existing maps.
As I've said in the past, I am always thinking up ideas for expansions that are in key strategic positions but the problem is that some races can claim them before they have any military forces at all. Hardened moons will make my dreams come true.
For the Space Hulk, I can imagine a large number of possible abilities. What I would like to see most is a sort of gravity well ability that slows the movement speed of all ships nearby and can be activated by any player with a ship close to the station. The original concept of Rotary Supercollider was for the center of the map to function as an arena where slow, powerful fleets are able to bring their firepower to bear against each other with no escape for the loser. A place for games to end, I suppose.
Still, whatever abilities it has the Hulk will make for a perfect solution to The Fray's turret rush problems.
One thing I'm a bit concerned about is what happens when the blinking asteroids displace a ship? Do they just instantly move it in the shortest direction to the edge?

All nice stuff. I agree with an above post, bring back the rotating asteroid belts from A1. that was a cool feature. But another Id like to see a wormhole similar to the one in TNG, with one end stable, and the other bouncing around the galaxy. Possibly 3-6 points.
