Use TGATool, you can just open the lightmap and copy existing images over it.

When I installed tgatool I got a msg saying ' c:tgatool3.bmp was not found' when I try to send to image editor.

ok, got it working, i think. I can sent the main texture to ms paint but I cant then do anything else in tgatool (it just has the busy mouse curser showing until I close the ms paint file.

You can only have 1 image open at a time, that's why my list of how I do it included copying the main texture into a seperate MSPaint. One opened through the Start menu, rather than TGATool.

It's a annoying limitation, though not a major one since it only takes a few seconds to copy the texture, close it then open the lightmap.

how do u make the black on the lightmap transparent in mspaint?

The 'second option for the Select tool' means the one under the buttons.

To make the background transparent (in MSPaint), select the Pick Color tool and right-click the color you need then select the second option for the Select tool automatically used when you paste the image in. Best to copy the image, set the background, use Ctrl-Z to remove it then paste again.
