I guess I could put up odf's, then link to the file itself on A2 files...

The reason aurora class ships are so goddamn ugly is 1) Because all the ones we have found so far are damaged 2) Because they are warships. do you see a beautiful Prometheus, and would you call most modern warships beautiful? It was designed to kill stuff, not to look good. What would you rather have: a good looking ship that cant protect you or a hideous ship that can? The reason Atlantis and puddle jumpers look so good is because they werent originally war ships, but places to live or to explore in. I personally love the aurora design. And its not the only terrible looking ship they had either. That would be the Destiny.

welcome to the forums, there's a lot of stargate fans here lol. destiny is kinda ugly, but maybe it looked better before its voyage.

Welcome.
Warship = shit-hideous? Tell that to the Defiant and B'rel Class...
Both, the beautiful and powerful Sovereign (or, better yet, a Galaxy).

Notice also how Aurora class ships aren't symmetrical, not that I care, I think it adds a nice quality. I think generally the Ancients cared less about the exterior design and more about the internal workings. They put a lot of things on the exterior of the hull creating a messy, disorganized look, rather than under the hull like Federation ships which creates a clean, smooth look. Also their designs tend to be very fractal and deal with angles that are multiples of 30 degrees which tend to create a very busy look. By the time they were making Aurora class ships in earnest the Ancients probably didn't care what it looked like on the outside too much and were more concerned with kicking the Wraith's ass.
It's a design philosophy, I personally love it.
As for Destiny, it was created prior to Atlantis even, perhaps by thousands of years, their design tastes obviously changed significantly in that time frame. They were also setting out to create something which could go for millennia, and if a design which don't look to pretty works, so be it. And like Myles said, it probably looked a lot better fresh out of the docks. Ten million years (or however long it's been) will do that to a ship.

More like 'Empire preference'. Different empire, different priorities.
