Warp was a feature before in Armada II but it seems to have been unpopular and fleet ops playability benefits without it. It might not be "pure" star trek but warp does have a place with warp ins.

If you added depth to a top down game that plays on a mostly 2d basis then it wouldn't have much effect. However in a game with all around 3d environment and a square sector rather than a flat one there would be different routes maybe and some extra strategy options. As I said though I don't think it is possible to add it to fleet ops and would pretty much require a new game.

Warp drive is the most critical part of star trek, it isn't star trek without warp drive. You can't argue that. It simply is.

Secondly, 3 dimensions not adding more strategy to the game? Wow....

Regardless of if you agree or not, they should still be part of settings, it doesn't mean you have to play with them.

Yeah warp in the A2 sense won't ever be added. Warp is important to Star Trek, sure, but it has no place in this RTS. Just causes too many problems and completely changes the way the game is played too much.

However, there will still be plenty of neat ways to see stuff "Warp in" and get the animation and sound :). I think that makes it cooler anyway!
