one of my favorite strategies for base smashing is a very simple one--the rush. first, take a large group of warbirds--6 to 16 works depending on enemy strength--and assemble two large groups of rhienns. torpedo refits are preferable for starbase popping but it's a good idea to include phaser refits too for use against enemy ships. assemble these outside the enemy base's most vulnerable flank (under cloak works best). rush the battleships into the enemy base in a sheet formation to better spread them about the base. they will quickly draw the enemy's attention away from the cloaked rhienns outside the base. once the enemy base is in total chaos, rush the destroyers in and blast eveything, starting with static defences and them moving to shipyards to stop ship production. before you know it, the base is gone. your fleet should survive with minimal casulaties (1 or 2 warbirds depending on how fast you move them out of the area when damaged and 4 or 5 with damaged shields). this strategy causes the enemy to waste their defending starships and turrets on your warbirds so when you move in the fresh and heavily armed rheinns, they're screwed. having your ships on top of their base also limits the enemy's ability to build new ships and turrets.
this works best against the AI as it usually leaves a big spot open in it's defences. against players use artillery to draw out the enemy ships and open a hole in the defences for you ships to flood through. the only draw back is the cost and time it takes to assemble your attack force and move it. take you time and attack intellegently.
