Actually in ST:XI, they aren't destroyed, if we are talking about the alternate universe (at least not yet  ^-^)

?

the concurrent timeline. 2387 - Romulus was destroyed by a solar flare. thta event triggered the narada's time travel which triggered the alternate timeline.

Romulus' destruction is maintimeline.

romulan fleets may remain. romulans may remain. Nothing is clear as to how many and in what strength.

One thing is clear tho - if he destruction of cardassia and its population would in the opinion of fandom cause the removal of the Cardassian Union from the club of Alpha quadrant powers, romulus' destruction and with it their PRIMARY DILITHIUM Mining Source - Remus, then they are most certainly diminished as a power by 2387-2390

That doesn't really matter though, because we have established that Romulus hasn't exploded in the FO timeline.

correct. i was replying to the threads after optec's last post.

I for one am fine with Optec's established continuity (as long as i see "galors flying about" in FO as well :))

Yeah, Galors are a welcome sight anytime. The Cardassians certainly built enough for many to survive the war.

The death of Romulus has issues anyway. Remember the episode with the Metaphasic shielding, and the special torpedo that stabilized stars?  Why, pray tell, didn't starfleet just send this technology to Romulus?

Secondly...the Vulcan Science Academy was going to save Romulus from it's star going nova by...collapsing it into a black hole?  This would not save Romulus, it would destroy it just as certainly as the supernova.  Nero had ever right to hate Vulcans, even if Spock had gotten there in time, because he saw the technology that was supposed to 'save' his homeworld was really just a different way to kill it off.

If you really must reconcile the timeline events, here's a couple options.

#1 - The Federation sends the stabilizing torpedo to the Romulans via-subspace radio.  The Romulans replicate one, deploy it, and save their star.
#2 - Q forsees that without the presence of the Romulan Star Empire, events will lead to the premature death of his 'pet' human, Picard.  He stops the Supernova without anybody ever realizing that one was going to happen.
#3 - The Romulans, not shabby at all in the scientific areas, stabilize their own sun, not involving anybody else.
#4 - The Orion Syndicate steals the Star-Stabilizing torpedo, sells it to the Ferengi, who sell it to the Romulans.

Better question; Why haven't the Romulans already stolen the tech? That's one of the things the Tal Shiar does best.

Q would never directly interfere in in the event, he tends to provide a few clues and use the problems as a means of testing (or 'annoying' as the tested would say) people.

Do some research about that super nova thing.

I think some information is from the comic, some from the novel, however, the facts are:

The star going super nova was the so called "Hobus star", which is not the central star of the Romulan system.

The super nova was different from all super novae before. I don't remember the exact explanation, but the result is that it could have destroyed large amounts of both Alpha and Beta quadrants or perhaps even jeopardize the whole galaxy.

The creation of a black hole to contain this explosion was the thought solution. Apparently, it worked. But it came a little to late, as the beginning super nova already consumed Romulus and Remus.

That's what I read... I think there is a summary of all this info on Memory Alpha.
