well i just played my first game and thought i would give you guys some feedback on it,
im sure most of you wont agree with me on these but hey feedback is feedback.
Pros:
new race the Dominion
real sexy textures
smoother look/feel to the game
lots of new ships
avatar (yes i like this idea)
lots of new abilitys
no 3D mode, dont think anyone ever used it
cons;
- 2 races cardasians and species 8472
no warp ( this was an ingame feature and was easily disable/enabled)
no hight map, ( again an ingame feature easily reduced)

Cardassians and 8472 won't be cons forever; they're planned as a minor NPC race and individual map units, respectivly.

Cardassians and 8472 were removed as playable because they aren't important in FO's story and I think warp was removed because it was really easy to abuse.

Partly easy abuse (outrunning torps), partly just badly added and not suited for this type of game.

There is no story for flops so theres little point in putting it down to theres no room in the story when one doesnt exist, its just online multiplayer with instant action.

You may want to check the guide, it describes the FO storyline.
The Campaigns that will be in the game later.

Cardassians are pretty important in the storyline, however their current 'status' just ensures that they don't have a large gameplay role.

Doesnt matter unless there is a story mode to actually make use of a story then theres no point.
The dominion were defeated after the dom war and part of the treaty was scrapping alot of their stuff and going back to their own space and that female to go to a fed prison for a long time.
If the dominion can come back then the story can be altered to do the same for the cardasians.
Secretly some jerk in some random jerk part of space builds up a super secret fleet of galors and other such balls and launches a surprise attack on local planetary systems and quickly assumes control to form the new cardasion union.
Storys can be changed and since there is NO story mode then a story isnt really important to stick to.
In my opinion the one thing fleet ops needs right now is more playable races and the cardasians already have a ton of made up ships ready to be added from a2 so there would be little work in adding them to the official fleet ops game.

I agree, the Cardassians should be added to the game as a playable faction. According to the Project Progress page, the Cardassian pack is going to be added, but as a non-playable faction. They will easily be able to be made into a playable faction.

There IS a story for Fleet Ops, and it is what the Devs decide what the story will be. I think most of it has already been written down at least the outline, and they have no intention of deviating from it I think.

it is now obvious to me that it would be wrong to compare A2 with FO as they are now very distinctively different games.

That's wrong.
FO is originally a fan-made role-playing game, so the story itself is simply not yet known to us (at least not more than stated in the guide).

Aye, Optec has special plans for the story release and so the guide apocrypha is mere back story
. It doesn't make the over arching timeline any less relevant, and abilities and vessels play a role there: some of the history of Fleet Ops can even be discerned via the tooltips
