A2_Tiger wrote:well i just played my first game and thought i would give you guys some feedback on it,
im sure most of you wont agree with me on these but hey feedback is feedback.
Pros:
new race the Dominion
real sexy textures
smoother look/feel to the game
lots of new ships
avatar (yes i like this idea)
lots of new abilitys
no 3D mode, dont think anyone ever used it
cons;
- 2 races cardasians and species 8472
no warp ( this was an ingame feature and was easily disable/enabled)
no hight map, ( again an ingame feature easily reduced)
I also was very dissapointed with the removal of map Height. I thought ti was a very inovative addition to the RTS genre and made a ton of sense for something set in space. Ultimately I think the devs, while very talented, were to lazy to keep it built in and balance around it. A valid reason since they do this in their spare time granted, but no less unfortunate. Having to think in 3-D was something I don't think any other RTS has done.

The Self-configuring torpedo system passive on the veteran Nebula Refit also mentions the aftermath of the war, specifically about the Cardassians.

I also liked map height and it was something that SHOULD NOT have been removed. STA2 actually feels more like Star Trek than Fleet Operations does. But at least the developers of Fleet Operations made sure that the game was balanced. Although I do miss the self-destruct feature.

Map height was just done poorly. Try playing Homeworld and you'll see how to implement it well. Part of the problem was that A2 still used a largely 2D system with 3D added as an afterthought. The camera was strictly top down except in the mostly useless cinematic mode, you couldn't stack structures, line of sight worked off of a cylinder rather than a sphere, etc. Fixing it would have required a new engine.

The cylinder part on the sensors is a balance crusher, but at least the weapons range worked well as a sphere. I don't think it would require a whole new engine to the game, but it would require significant modifications to how it handles sensor range. Maybe make it a smoother cylinder while you're at it.

yep, more of the storyline will be included in future patches and features
I'm glad that you enjoy playing Fleet Operations

Oh and Tiger map height was turned back on recently though not usable right a way you would have to do the rest yourself to get it fully working again.
He means the tactical view which is ofcourse still in the game so, I have no idea what he is referring to.

I'll save you the time of turning it back on. Create a Mods folder in the FleetOps/Data directory and download this mod:
Download Version 1.0.0.4
Just extract the "FleetOps_WithHeight" folder into the newly created "Mods" folder and use "Options -> Mod Options" in the game to launch the mod. There's also a guide page about using the mod manager. Enjoy!

Well, I do use it on occasion.

yeah 3d mode is still there, it was not that bad tbh now that i think back it was good for picking out targets on 8472 while they where building, also it made nice screenshots.
well after 10 or so games now and 2 back to back 1v1 victorys against poerter and stargazer i must say im starting to get a feel for this game and like it very much.
