Playing the Civ-4 mod "Fall from Heaven" the other day with the Archos Civilization I wondered if something similar could be implemented for FO. Basically the idea is that a unity may take special promotions (which exclude other "special promotions"). In fact, a once baby spider turned into a special variety of adult giant spider. One is able to shoot webs, the other one is able to attack from sea with impunity etc. you get the point

So I wondered whether I would be possible to assign certain "Captain Classes" instead of gaining the final veterancy level, which influence ship values and specials. These might differ from Avatar to Avatar.

As such one could implement various famous personalities: (Names for Canon)
Intrepid gains 2nd officer Level -> Take "Commander Class: Janeway" as Captain -> Intrepid insta-gibs Borgvessels

Or even better:
Defiant Class -> Take "Commander Class: Sisko" as Captain -> Defiant gains +4 to System Values and "O'Brian! Get it done!" Skill
Defiant Class -> Take "Security Class: Worf" as Captain -> Defiant gains speed and attack speed increase and the "Prepare Ramming Speed!" Skill
Defiant Class -> Take "Science Class: Dax" as Captain -> Defiant gains System Value increase as well as Combat tractor beams and the "Repolarize the intitial Combustion Matrix" Skill

EDIT: I'm not a fed player! I just thought of a way to address the charisma and skill of major Starfleet personel

o'brien not o'brian lol. dont mess with the myles/miles

i disagree with giving the defiant ramming speed, worf was being a drama queen when he ordered that. defiants should never be reduced to ramming like bugs.

Although interesting as far as i've gotten to understand how A2 works this would mean essentially a whole new ODF for each type of ship in the game.

All of which would have to be balanced. It would basically be hero units which the developers have said they will not be adding.

Aren't ship/veteran variants on the to-do list? As random variants rather than seperate options. I know that ships in general will eventually vary, but I don't know about veterans.

Defiant and ramming speed don't go well together (how often does Starfleet actually try that?), but you know Worf would have gone ahead with it. He's the sort who refuses to die without taking someone with him.

yeah worf was stupid. like harry kim. harry always complained about never being promoted, but he didnt deserve promotion he was a moron.

I would especially love to have Janeways Intepid with the propertie "Coffee, black" which enables two specials:

"One more cup" (...and I'll jump to warp.) which will allow the ship to engage warpspeed.

"The finest organic suspension" (... ever devised...I beat the Borg with it.) which insta-kills the next hosile borg vessel in range.

:D

No, it should have a weapon called 'Coffee shortage' sending the ship into a frenzy capable of sending Jem'Hadar fleeing.

And if they won't flee, Neelix will make them suffer with his coffee substitute

The original idea seems very very micromanagement intensive, as veterans are supposed to be more of a random occurrence rather than a "choice". I can see this working well with hero type units though (not veterans) or possibly with some sort of Noxter "upgrade" system for its Breeders :)

Oh great, more stuff for the Feds...  :schmoll:

I've to admit that i wasn't particularly serious about the actual implementation ;) Worf WAS a ridiculous captain

Hm,yeah. The idea was to have fed-vet-capts only for certain ship-classes, I thought that might make other ship-classes (for feds only!) more attractive, especially concering avatar-choice.

Defiant and ramming speed don't go well together (how often does Starfleet actually try that?), but you know Worf would have gone ahead with it. He's the sort who refuses to die without taking someone with him.
Don't blame me, it's canon ;)

Hmm, I thought that people care more about their vets in mp; as such Feds would get an extra tier of veterancy with "Speciality Captains" (whatever they might be)

Oh great, more stuff for the Feds...
I think and I hope that the Founders let trickle ideas through ;)

yep we have some ideas to bring popular guys from the star trek and fleetops universe in, that wont make it into the ranks of avatars :) yet, it will take quite some time, but i think we could work on that after the race redo. suggestions and ideas are always welcome :)

FTW

EDIT:
But this also gives me a little idea for a worfie-defiant.  Sure, the Federation wouldn't allow ramming speed unless they had a way of not losing the ship/crew (like the Ent-E Every time it rams something)

In that case, Worf could have his own little special ability, I don't know what it would be called (Sword Of Kahless, or something else Klingon-y)
-Disable All systems except impulse and forward shields.  Full speed toward enemy ship using the Defiant's tough hull + strengthened forward shield to graze it, causing heavy damage.  Extra impulse thrust carries defiant out of harm's way while shields reset/repairs.

Worf gets his cake, and the Fed's don't have to eat the cost of replacing a Defiant.

What, you don't want to see Veteran Commander:  Tomalak, for a D'deridex?

Or Veteran Commander: Kahless II, for a Negh'var?

Or Veteran Commander: Vorta, for...well...anything the founders care to?

Or even...Initialize Speaker Protocol: (race here, can't be Borg), for a Cube as a special and limited upgrade that grotesquely upgrades that single cube's abilities against that race (requiring mixed-tech to do it)?  After all, the Picard-Drone wasn't given a unique name.  Locutus is Latin for 'Speaker'.  It was a job designation that was hoped to pacify the humans.  (Didn't work, but his knowledge sure tore up Starfleet.)

Borg don't need veterans, they get the Command Cube.

Locutus wasn't given a uniqe name? Have you heard the Borg's normal range of names? Borg don't use latin, show creators use it.
