Re: Synchronize (aka - refresh cycle)
With the removal of Graviton Mines, are they any detectable/noticeable permanent specials left in the game to use it on? At the moment, I ignore it, because I haven't found any reason to use it anymore. Before, B'rel scared me because a fleet of them could force an entire Borg fleet into resynch, leaving them easy meat for the Klingon's heavy hitters.

Graviton Mines still exist, they're just on the Klingon Rhienn instead of the B'rel. I think it works with spies.

Hmm, but the regen cycle is only for this. I'm not satisfied with it. It needs to have something... more. Even if it wont repair faster, make the special weapon-energy-regen faster... or something like that. I let a ship stay for 30 seconds that will do nothing and cant do anything. Its a high risk and if I use this ability, I want to get something back... no only "spys and marker" are gone.
What about this:
If a ships gets into the regen cycle, the ship may analyse and sum up all the actions done to this point. It will regenerate all systems, repair critical points, exterminate unwanted factors (like markers and spies) refill the special energy faster through the fact, that the ships does not anything. While the drones are asleep, they recalculate their actions and are able to operate better in the next step. This means: Every kill this ship has done to this point can be analysed and this ship will get a better resistance and offensive value against ships the collective have fought. It will interlink with assimilated ships, analyze its parameters and the adaption can go on progress.
If a ships gets into sleep, you have this:
- Higher resistance against ships of the class, that were assimilated (ships gets into the tech-queue)
- Slightly faster special energy regen
- Slightly faster hull regen
- Deactivation of permanent effects
So, your cube will "establish the link to the collective", will do an in-field update and can adapt for future fights against ships, that have been assimilated. The assimilated ship itself must have gone to sleep, in order so "send" its values to the collective and all other ships of the collective must "sleep" to recieve it. If done, you get a bonus of additional 8% on offense, and 10% on defense against this ship class.

Wait...so you're telling me that the Borg have a special ability on all their ships that only works against a high-tier Romulan Building, a temporary power of a single Romulan Avatar from a single light ship that otherwise does poorly against Borg vessels, and against a Romulan Mixed-tech vessel that requires they have Klingon technology?
That...that's not even scary to the Romulans, and they're the only ones impeded at all.

wow, that would be so op. u could just sit in your base and build up xp after every battle where u assimilated something.

shrike no longer has spy. only intel centre does. shrike special is engine killer of support ships (like dodeca)
also the point of refresh cycle in my opinion is simply to allow the borg to get rid of spies and grav markers. all other races repair at a yard, as borg dont have a yard, they need a way to get rid of markers and stuff.
that is the refresh cycle. im happy with it only being used for that.

Interestng bunch of opinions -You all are right about the specials being redundant and repetative. An interesting route to go might be a way to get around the borgs research..... In example lets say a tech assim scube is being attacked by an intrepid with tricobalt torpedoes - the scube assimilates the special and instead of granting the scube tricobolt torps it enables devastating attack for the collective. in essence assimilating the torpedo based weapon allowed the borg to circumvent researching one of their own specials. Certain races can could have specific weapons that when assimilated grant the borg the research.
Devastating attack - Tricobolt torpedoes assmilated
Slicer - leahval beam special (forget what its called)
Anyway just kind of start..... with what might be neat as an alternative method for borg to utilize its weapons.

the leahval level 1 special is metaphasic disruptor. an all round awesome special.
and i dont think assiming an intrep with trico should give dev attack, they are such different tech.
just like meta d and slicer.
also it would throw the balance quite a lot. assimilate 1 intrep in the early game, and get a special which needs an expensive borg tech lab (which most people make in mid-late game)

If any kind of tech assimilation were to occur, I'd rather have it be a predetermined list of things that the devs can control. So you could steal a random choice of 5 dominion specials, etc. Or better yet, a 'borgified' version of the special. It would be easier to code, as well.

Overwhelming Assault - The Cube fires up to 5 Devastating Assault torpedoes at up to 5 seperate targets. These torpedoes do shield damage, and shield subsystem damage only.
That kind of 'borgified' tech?
I suddenly pictured hyperspace nanites. I feel dirty now.

When it comes to tech assimilation, I still prefer my idea of how it would work; using that tech to alter their own in some small way.

Just as a slight difference and for pure looks what if the borg ship gets the technology from a ship by doing the Q Who cutting a segment out of it and sucking it in.
