Part of the reason they're more flexible is that if you want to upgrade one aspect on a PC you actually can without buying a whole new computer. Apple has been really heavy on the sealed case thing for a while now. Also, the fact that Mac still seems to think that most users don't want two or three button mice is ridiculous.

the sealed case example is a perfect example of apple's (aka steve job's) ideas of the consumer
as far as jobs is concerned the consumer is stupid and steve jobs is smarter than the consumer and should tell the consumer what to do, because if steve didnt tell the consumer what to do we would set our computers on fire because we are stupid. our ideas of what our technology should be/do/look like are meaningless to him. he is the ultimate control freak. do what steve jobs says or go f**k yourself. he doesnt want us changing his babies (his tech) so we should just accept what apple gives us whether we like it or not, whether its good or not. and he has the cheek to criticise adobe and their handling of flash. i bet steve jobs wont let flash on iphone/podtouch/pad is because apple is building its own version (like ms silverlight) and is gonna challenge flash.
i hate that about apple. if i pay hundreds of pounds of my money to apple (which i will never do) I should decide what i do with it. its my choice, not apple's. when u buy a pc its your choice, you can change bits, upgrade bits, put your computer in a teddy bear or a watch etc. u can even install linux
(kidding i love linux) but with apple its do what steve tells you, let steve rape u up the chuff and pay him for the privilege!!

I agree with both of you, Mywolf and Dirc. A lot of Mac users that I personally know, refuse to believe that Mac doesn't make their own proprietary hardware. Granted, there are a few instances where Mac used stuff in their computers that wasn't the norm......but they didn't design the architecture or manufacture the hardware....it was stuff already in use. The only difference is the software.
One one hand, you have software with a learning curve that can do virtually anything (i.e. Linux, OpenBSD, Unix, etc.). On another hand you have software that's pretty intuitive and user-friendly with a lot of choice and functionality (i.e. Windows). Lastly, you have software that looks pretty and is so user friendly, you don't even have to know what it does...you just open it and it automatically assumes what you want to do and does it for you. The drawback being you have very little choice in anything you do.
The reason I don't buy Apply products and I try to sway my friends and family from buying them is there is something about Macs that turns people into pretentious A-holes. Here is an example conversation I have with almost every Mac user:
Me: "So why do you like Macs?"
Person: "I just do....they're better!"
Me: "What makes them better?"
Person: "Because its Apple!"
Me: "Yes, I understand that....but what about Apple makes it better?"
Person: "Better hardware!"
Me: "Macs use the same hardware found in most PC's. Hardware isn't designed around software, its
the other way around."
Person: "Well its the software too. It works better!"
Me: "How does it work better?"
Person: "It just does!"
Me: "Yes, I understand that....but HOW does it work better?"
Person: "Macs have software that will only work with its hardware!"
Me: "I believe we covered the fact that Macs use the SAME hardware that is in PC's"
Person: "Well there has only been 6 viruses for Macs....there are millions and millions for PC's"
Me: "Actually, there's been millions for Macs as well...that's why there are antivirus programs out there for Macs. PC's do have more viruses, because they control more of the user base. For example, the
iPhone is one of the most used phone OS's.....so there are a lot more viruses for it then there are for other phone OS's."
Person: "Well, I guess I don't know what makes a Mac better than a PC. What does make them different?"
Me: "Software and price. That is it. On one hand, you have a simple, easy to use interface that gives you a lot of options and choices. On the other hand, you have a even simpler, easier to use interface that gives you less options and choices but is near idiot-proof to use. Apple puts a higher price tag on their products basically because they can, because they appeal to that customer base who doesn't want to think for themselves. What people buy their computer for should be a reflection of their own personal needs, wants, and expression."
Person: "Oh....maybe I should consider looking at PCs then."
That was an actual conversation I had with a Mac user while I was shopping at a Best Buy a few months ago. That same day I also overheard two Mac users shouting at each other. I thought maybe there was a fight brewing, so I got closer for a better view of the show. What were they shouting about? How great Macs are....two adults, sounded like they were arguing, because of how great features were. Then I heard the one guy (dressed to the nines by the way....he was looking to buy 2 iPads for his kids and looked like he had a very good paying job....this is relevant!!) say this "iWork is so much easier to type in....I can type 30 words per minute, which is screaming fast! (The other guy goes "wow...that's fast!")....Microsoft Word is so complicated....you have to click all around to type stuff....its ridiculous. I don't understand why everyone doesn't have a Mac?!"
That's yet another example of the stupidity of the average Mac user. The reason I mention him being dressed nice. I was trying to wrap my head around this guy being able to afford to buy iPads for his kids, iPhones for his kids, nice suits, etc....then I was trying to discover what job you could have to be this much of an idiot and make, seemingly, that much money!
Now, I must apologize to any Mac users on the forum....unless you fit in that mold I put up top. There are industries that require you to use Mac's because of their software and compatibility. I understand that. And there are people that like the ease of use of the software and aren't dumb. But EVERY Mac user, except two, I have met in my life fits into that mold. Most talk more vehemently about their computers than how much they love their spouses and children.....its ridiculous!
Sorry for ranting....if you couldn't tell I get worked up over Mac users. Here's something funny for you guys to read.....

I...
30wpm?
There are people who think that's fast?
How did we come to this road? I'm pretty rusty, and seeing that compelled me to fire up the old software again and check. I'm down to 62wpm, from my peak of 93wpm. If I actually typed more, I could get back up there.
30wpm...screaming fast? Do me a favor. Pimp-slap that guy sometime.
eta: fixed a typo caused by flabbergastedness.

That was fast in 4th grade (at my school at least.) I was at 28 wpm back then, I can type a lot faster now (not sure how fast, I'll check.)
EDIT: 54wpm, but that was using a test that contained a lot of very uncommon words (and place names.) Also slowed down due to a few typos.
EDIT2: another test also shows 54 wpm.
Macs will probably be around for a long time, and they will probably remain the minority of computers.

My brother and I both avg around 85 wpm. Some tests are too easy and we can get 95, and some tests are very complicated and we got around 75.

I'm the teacher's aid for the computer teacher at my high school. One of the classes that students can choose is a typing class and I routinely see speeds of 50-60 words per minute when grading. Why in the world would somebody think that 30 is fast?

Because they have their secretary do all the typing.

Super funny link, Borg.

30wpm is fast for me lol, but that is only cuz I end up going back fixing typos and trying to figure out how to spell words. When I was in HS I typed about 80wpm....but that was years ago now...never really had much demand to keep up the typing speed since i use a lot of ctlr-c and ctrl-v
.
Anyways...IMO Everything apple is designed to be for people who dont want versatility and feel to overwhelmed by CHOICE...But some of the higher end macs do make nice workstations but then most of those the OS is imediately wiped off of there and some other OS is installed....
The only thing by apple that ever had any wow factor for me was the ipod touch which I played with in best buy for bout 2 seconds til the fucking thing threw out an error then I sat it down walked away and got a 120gb zune for half the price which works way better and plus looks better and dosent feel like some thin peice of crap that will break in my pocket unlike that anorexic thin ipod touch.
Owning a mac is all about being part of the "mac" culture thats it....when you go into malls and they have those apple or mac stores it feels like a social club of some sort....and not a actual place of buisness...I remember looking at some macbook and the sales associate comes up to me and says "now if red isnt ur color we have this in a variety of colors"....wtf....I asked him what the processor was rated at and how much ram came installed and what kind of graphics chip is uses cuz that info was not on the info card for it....the sales associate just says "it has good graphics see?" pointing toward the display...
Now I admit that is not much worse than a best buy associate but still....
Whatever....If you own a mac and are happy good for you......but its not my thing ....I like versatillity and the option to turn off stuff and make my OS more unstable lol

My limiting factor in typing is knowing how to spell things lol and thinking of what i want to say 30 wpm is rather slow if you as me.
