That would only work really if it had a full strength artillery weapon, not a sissy torpedo like the first one. Maybe let it switch between high AOE and high damage?

I don't think feds will get an artillery ships, it's not their style.

Then i could maybe see it as a support vessel. I just hate those stupid tricobalt torpedoes.

I still don't understand why the steam runner was picked to be the Artillery bucket in the first place

They probably assumed no-one would no enough about it to complain. It wasn't really shown on-screen often.

Because, in Armada 1, someone decided to swap the Akira and Steamrunner. In First Contact, we saw the Akira as a torpedo cruiser, whereas the Steamrunner was only seen firing phasers. For this, the Steamrunner would be better as fcruise1. But it didn't seem right that the Akira should be slow and have no defences (and only have a tricobalt launcher), so, as we've not seen much of the Steamrunner, they just swapped them.

Ok, this is the last time I'll ask something like this in an only "almost" fitting thread:
I tried to search the forum for techtree and such, but the info on the current 3.0 version seems to be really sparse.
So, is the Steamrunner currently in or has it been removed? Will it return?
To reduce this kind of questions for the future:
Could someone point me to information on buildable vessels for the factions or even techtrees?
I almost missed the Dominion Dreadnought this way and don't want to miss more.

In zebhs guide there should be a general list of all combat vessels.

I like the steamrunner, paired with a Norway or two it is a major threat to any building, station or defence and it can even make a battleship think twice. Micromanaged well with the Norways and you can keep up the 1 Tri-Cobalt torpedo per second using the special power transfer ability!!!
This quickly reduces stations to dust and also happens to obliterate large battleships or borg ships. Couple with the Plasma coil from the norways and the little task force of 3-4 ships can launch quite successful raids on mining facilities (tricobalt the mining station to death... If no one has responded use the plasma coil on the unlucky frieghters then get out of there!!!
As to the Akira and the steamrunner posted in the original post i would prefer the rolls to be reversed. The Akira was definately the federations TORPEDO/ARTILLERY ship. Stated by its designers and the DS9 Producers in an interview to carry 15 torpedo tubes AND multiple through deck shuttlebays the ship was designed to be an offensive beast of a ship.
Personally i would place the steamrunner as the federations first cruiser, with good phaser arcs and maybe 2 phasers.
Then have the Akira as a long range multiple torpedo launching artillery support ship. Slap it down with a tri-cobalt Torpedo launcher and a regular torpedo launcher in game. Give it a special that perhaps increases the rate of fire on the tri-cobalt and also fires the normal torpedoes at same rate but with a burst volley (so 2 torpedoes per shot)... With its later officer abilities you suddenly have a very effective ship that with its special can tear apart battleships or buildings and perhaps even hold its own against a cruiser or two due to a high rate of fire (and AOE at officer level)
As to a Steamrunner mark II. I don't like the Idea personally, the steamrunner isn't much older than the Akira and it's not exactly an unsuccessful ship!

Thanks. I'll give it a try.

I like tricobalt torpedoes just fine, if they were only implemented such as seen on Voyager - fewer shots, but waaay more powerful, it would do wonders for the Intrepid and for the Steamrunner.

After trying the steamrunner some more, i have to say it is good at softening stations and large vessels. I just wish that it was more of a conventional vessel...

I second that, both parts of the post.
I'd like it to be buildable, as well. After looking it up in zebh's guide, I found it to be a Warp-in vessel... until then I hadn't encountered even one of them in FO 3.0 as the randomness had all my Warp-ins till then be Nebulas, Excelsiors or Galaxies.
After all the discussion about the regular Miranda being in Federation fleets in the Dominion war, I would prefer to have the Miranda as Warp-in instead of the Steamrunner, which after all is so new that it should be part of the standard line of buildable vessels.

Have to say i can agree with that one. Steamrunner as your buildable ship...
The miranda has low defense but is bristling with weapons so you could maybe make it a sort of semi-artillery/assault warp in ship...
or just as a ship that dies if it gets shot
