Should the Defiant have an Aft Phaser?
Post ideas and suggestions on new features or improvements here.

I don't think a light aft phaser with quite a restrictive (say, 70 degree) fire arc wouldn't create a problem. And it would look awesome

Noted down.
its already been suggested to give bugs cloak detect like in ds9, but most people hated the idea. it would unbalance the game if it was too powerful, it would have to be very weak cloak detect, or maybe only for vet bugs.

According to canon, there is no aft phaser array. Though there is a fore one on the dorsal (shown in a mirror universe episode).
I still think a Defiant should be all fwd.

I'm also for the full front ability. But I must say, this ship is for the pulse weapons not the best ship in late game. But it IS a late game ship.
So, we have a problem of a pulse based late game ship that got the ability to disable weapons and only on the golden bars it will gain weapons that may be effective against larger ships.
I think the defiant should be good against borg - so give the pulse based weapon an increase in hull damage. If the defiant is overwhelmed by long range beam fire, what would you do? Well, it got the ablative armor but there is no way, that this ship could evade beam weapons.
So this is more a feature request: Make the beam weapons to miss a target. Then the defiant may be hold out longer against bigger ships. One of the key features of the defiant is, that it can evade fire very good and got a defensive strength that holds up a looong time, IF it got hit.
We saw that in Defiant vs. Vor'cha, Defiant against Negh'Var, Defiant against many bugs...
The Defiant should be a very persistent ship that will go down very slowly and will make mincemeat out of every destroyer and even cruisers and should be able to play a key-role in attacking bigger ships.
Problem: We atre not in the show. You cant withstand a whole fleet with a single defiant. You have to balance it out with other ships. So the defiant is short in range, not so fast like other "small" ships so it gains a huge offensive and defensive value with a nice feature. Outbalanced with the fact, that the defiant will get its quantums at the golden bar.
I like the idea of the cloaking device for the defiant and the mines are also very good. Maybe, we could cancel the defiant from the mixed tech yards and give it "mines" and "cloaking" with a technology research? This wont make the defiant to a bloddy one, because the special energy is limited, aside from the special weapons it got. It can only use the specials that it has got the energy for.
Maybe, it should be a "little" punchier.
To the specials:
The time, the weapons will be disabled will increase from rank to rank. So the defiant may have something like +1 second/rank.
Mines may be able to deactivate engines for a short amount of time over a fire radius, so the defiant can withdraw very well. The damage the mines will do depends on the rank the ship got.
Cloak: Maybe, the cloaking device will be very energy-hungry, so that you may cloak, but wont be able to do a critical shot right after decloaking. Over the ranks, the cloak will consume less energy so you will be able to do so right after decloaking.

Gameplay > Cannonism sure the defiant had all these things in the show, but in the ship the defiant could take hits from the dominion for half an hour while the akira/galaxys/excelsiors/mirandas were blown up in one shot. the defiant is not meant to be one of your main ships. Build a few of them and use them as a platform for knocking out your enemies weapons.

Well, the Defiant is great even with its pulses due to the passives. It does well against large ships like the Neghvar and Norexan, which take more damage from short ranged vessels, and the defiant also does more damage to long ranged vessels, and has ablative armor to negate it's weakness to shories. Plus, its critical shot is still great against end game ships, taking them out of combat for about 12 seconds while you concentrate on the smaller stuff. Also, you have to remember that Risner adds +5 to the offensive value, so pulses or no, that bonus certainly makes up for any damage reduction based on ship chassis. It's a pretty nice ship!

this was also shown in a prime universe episode, where the defiant under kira goes head to head against the lakota.

And, if you remember that episode accurately, refused to fire until she had already taken some serious damage. And that delay is the only reason she almost lost...almost.

Both ships held back in that fight, Lakota was as reluctant to kill a Starfleet ship as the Defiant.

well, i think the defiant should stay as it is ingame.
about the cannon talk: the defiant was never ever a battleship murderer, the big ones in the battles were taken by the big ones or in groups not by the defiant alone. Btw i think the defiant wouldnt stand a chance against the big E or the Venture. Its still only a quite small ship, but one that seriosly kicks ass. And thats how its in FO too. Please guys stop thinking the defiant is some kind of god ship ... it isnt.

The Defiant itself provided much of the 'godship' status. Valiant and the Defiants that attacked the Prometheus weren't as powerful as that one. It's real power come mainly from speed; it fires fast and flies like a fighter.
Not like I'd want the game changed to reflect that; it's still a Battleship.

in my sight the valiant and the ones that attacked the prometheus were simply more realistic. While the defiant itself seems to be at some the result of some horrible writing in some DS9 Episodes.

i think the defiant was a little too powerful sometimes. especially when it destroyed five bugs in a row, when a galaxy class starship couldnt take out even one bug.
but i still loved watching it kick bottom
