Why was this removed, its a perfectly legit feature, please re-add it in a future release.

So that people cannot prevent a ship from being taken. Any useful ability has been removed and replaced with Special Weapons that are either overpowered, bugged or just plain useless.

Things like Tractor beams and Self-Destruct (which are standard to almost every ship class) were removed because the team probably doesn't like them, and since they are the one making the mod, their interests are the important ones.

I did? Reading the post again, I guess it did seem slightly bitter.

Just a little :P

I honestly thought that although Self-Destruct was a cool feature, it was a bad gameplay feature. The ships don't have the same durability on most of the shows (well, discounting DS9 of course, where durability was nonexistent most of the time) and it is much nicer to be able to capture ships than simply self destruct them. Lets face it, a game can only be made TV realistic to a certain point--all evidence points that all ships have self destruct devices... but this would be unrealistic for this RTS.

I personally think every ship should have tractor beam, though its strenght depends on how powerful, and self destruct, but the systems can be knocked out

All you have to do is destroy or disable the weapons. A group of Troop Transports can also take some ships too fast to micro the Self Destruct in anything other than an attack on one ship.

I've been and added a Self-destruct to my own game, one for all playable factions except the Borg. It is naturally still tied to the weapons and will cause minor damage (about 100 points) to anything in the immediate vicinity. The countdown and shockwave range varies by Empire (for example; the M/AM Reactor of the Federation and Blackhole of the Romulans are the longest, while the Klingons are the shortest).

What if you made troopships more common and/or increased boarding speed? then if you get the button press in in time then it gets to blow up but you can spam beaming at ships to capture them that quick.

in regards to the tractor beam, what if you make it so that it can only tow vessels that are lower classes of ship. For instance, destroyers can only tow scouts, but battleships can tow any ship except battleships? then if you want you could also have it so that tractor beams stack so if you have like 6 destroyers you can tow around a battleship.

initially the tractor beam has been taken out for the way in beta 2 or something that would have allowed moving turrets around with them. the todo for the tractor beam is still there and even i don't know why it takes so long for us to get it back on the constructors. it has annoyed me several times to have a ship floating around for like 5 minutes with no engines on the enemies border waiting to be destroyed.
as for self destruct. i don't think it's a wrong thing to have on every ship, however what i didn't like was that big self destruct button present taking up a valuable special weapon button slot. both of these issues were overcome since the release of 3.0. still, we'd like to be careful with reintegrating that feature as it might break the balancing or usefulness of the borg assimilation. there is currently enough other stuff to balance. as soon there is a tractor beam back in the game then i think the 'demand' for self destruct is lower.

can you make a slight chance that selfdestruct fails while being boarded or assimilated?

Tractor beams will be back on constructors for the next patch

that may be possible, but of what use could it be then if not in these situations?

Well I thought this could be a possibility of incorporating the selfdestruction without making assimilation impossible. The probability of failing could be used to finetune the balance between assimilation and evasion by selfdestraction.
