Self Destruct

I've seen a mod do that, I blew up 1 enemy ship and lost half my fleet (including many of the Battleships).

i don't see a real reason for self destruct. sure, you could prevent someone capturing your ship, but there are only a few rare cases where that is possible anyway. getting the big vessels with a lot of crew is hard enough, especially while the boarding vessels have their shields down. so take your chance and strike down one of their vessels while they are boarding yours.

Try protecting yourself with multiple cubes attacking a single battleship with a Holding beam each. I'd love to Auto-Destruct right there.
Ships with big crews can be taken easily, only 2 fleets are needed; 1 with warships, 1 with transports targetting the same starbase/ship.

yea, i think thats the advantage of the borg, that they can take vessels more easily

capturing vessels is not overpowered nor the ultimate tactic
you first have to win a fight to successfully take vessels. i think it is quite hard to capture vessels during a fight or just a bad tactic - at least against a human player with some experience

also remember that captured vessels and stations are very weak as usually their shields are down and systems damaged, so sometimes they cannot even return to a shipyard for repairs.
also if you capture a vessel you don't get the xp as if you were destroying it and your vessels might need to return to base when crew gets low...
capturing has disadvantages enough, a self destruct would capturing make even harder.
i don't think constructors should get a self destruct either, as they are important to gain mixed tech through an enemy constructor...

In stock, I always saw the Self-Destruct the same way as Saucer Seperation; It's not likely to be needed, but it's there just in case.

In a holding beam your ships computers are being taken over by the borg. Command processors will not function, so no self destruct 
A self destructing ship should greatly damage unshielded ships, and briefly knock out the engines of the surrounding ships; including your own.
And how about tractor beams?

All we know about the Holding beams is they send drones over. The higher level ones could interfere with the computer though.

owww, now i know, it's in the old 3.0 beta tester board, sorry for that
to make it short: we took tractor beams out to avoid exploiting which may have been possible in the old versions, which couldn't fix back then... so...yes, tractor beams are on todo to be coming back. it's not decided yet on which vessels though.

Yes , it´s hard enough, but not for Borg-Players....

I can see races like the Romulans doing anything possible to keep their tech away from prying eyes, destroying their own ships is nothing to them. Few races want enemies to get their tech and will try to make it as difficult as possible.
