One thing I've noticed is that when I play feds, I never have a reason to get the 3rd chassis upgrade. The reason is that I already have access to Excel IIs, which are awesome; Remores, which devastate shields; and all Warp-ins. The Sovereign, Defiant, and sometimes Phalanx just aren't worth the chassis upgrade once I have SFC (which usually comes before Eraudi yard in my build order.)
If the chassis upgrades were reduced to just two upgrades, then maybe Sovereigns and Defiants would actually be built.

So far online I have seen one player use Sovvies/Phalanxes/Defiants, and another player (who is much better at playing Feds) never even get the second chassis upgrade.
I've setup a poll in case me and that one pro fed player are just the weirdos.

I almost always use level 3 because of the Defiant, mainly just because I like them and the Galaxy is rare.

I prefered it when the Chassis and Sensor upgrades were combined, though.

It depends on the game situation but the first yard combined with SFC basically offers everything you need to win a game. But as a game developes and an opponent gets stronger the 3rd level ships might get quite useful. For me the Defiant's Critical Shot is the special to go for. The rest is eyecandy

I love the sovvie.  Make those Dodecs stop running away, make the K'vort/B'rel swarm stand still to be pulped, let your retreating fleet actually make it to the shipyard...

In my experience if I can get to the top, I make an effort to. The last chassis level Federation vessels are very powerful for their cost and have rather good special abilities :). I suspect if you asked people to remove the Imperial Yard you'd find a similar story.

who needs imperial yard, vorcha spam ftw. lol

Hahah sadly yes on the Imperial Yard :D.

I find that there is really no reason to get the Imperial yard beyond FUN :D.  Neggies are real cool to play with and we all wanna Vet one up :).  Really though, there is nothing in the Imperial Yard that can perform a task unable to be performed by the first two yards.

Only if you want Neggies for fun or feel you need the Bortas to crack a base ...

Vorcha/Luspet/Sang handle all the rest :).

Remember, for Martok - just as for Risner - the higher tech stuff is a hell of a good bargain  :D . Negh'vars are excellent long range unit crackers. I would say that although the high tech stuff is rare to see, it is valuable, and it greatly increases your combat effectiveness :). The only reason Romies and Domies feel different is because of their tech tree - but in reality they "suffer" the exact same problems. People just are loathe to tech up, but it is well worth it.

And that's something I don't get.  I don't feel right as rommies without at least one D'deridex, and the Cehlear is one of my favorite ships in the whole game.  I like it enough that I build way more of it than I really need.  (Doesn't hurt that those two ships specials are crippling against the enemy.  For at least a couple seconds, each Cehlear can completely lock down an enemy ship, and the Stealth Field cripples the remaining DPS while beams and torps fly into the locked down ships.  Best counter to the Borg in the whole game.)

Maybe Akira and Excelsior II should switch places...

There are plans to move the Akira up, if I remember correctly. I doubt the Excelsior-II will move down, though.

actually generix support refits can be spammed earlier usually, and they have plasma bolt, each bolt will disable weapons for ages, and each ship has enough energy for multiple bolts. the disruptor bombardment is really just a tractor beam that knocks out weapons lol. chargh has combat tractor beam which is good. borg ships can have holding beam, which works similarly. defiant has critical shot which is like plasma bolt. sovvie and war frigate take out engines. plenty of ways to stop that sphere sneaking off to regenerate. kvorts get engine disabling weapons when they rank

I think most people build Antares yard before researching 3-rd chassis upgrade, so switching Akira with Excelsior II would make sense.

Aside from the fact that building an Antares Yard before Chassis 3 is pretty much a guarantee, that would only make sense if the Akira was a Chassis 3 ship. It's Chassis 2, while the Excelsior-II would be available from the start.
