I believe one of the reasons to disable warp is to focus on more strategy. It matters where you put your ships, and you can't just send them anywhere at anytime.

I believe a similar strategic approach should be to the red and green alert statuses (stati?) of the ship stations.

For example, during green mode, your station is fully productive (gathering resources, perhaps). You might only have a shot or two in reserve.

It should take a bit of time to ramp up to red alert (forty five seconds, perhaps). When you are in red alert, you can fire your weapons, shield is up, although you are not productive.

A similar effect, and a lot easier to program, might be to replace turrets with mining ships that could fire as turrets. This would again give the player the choice between being productive and being in high defense mode.

Either approach would further stress strategy, especially of listening posts and scouting, and I believe we introduce some of the decisions of the shows.

thats a good idea but you would have people just building double of everything one on RA and one on GA just to do it that way.

This isn't an rpg so it's not really useful to have that on here. If you wanna rpg on the other hand...

Cost of structure can prohibit overbuilding.

There can also be a slow cost drain of being in red alert mode (which is consistant with both real life and the shows).

And the double use of mining and turrets would handle that as well, with engineers either being in work or defense mode).

It takes what 5 seconds to go to red alert? The only thing they lose when they do it is the energy that goes to Phasers and Shields, and that can be regenerated.

There is always a lot of running around on the space stations when a captain tells them to prepare for battle. In armada 2 world, that would be almost a minute.

If it was instant, few stations would ever be caught off guard.

Ramping up to red alerts, and having red alerts cost something, adds strategy and even realism. It also reinforces the role of sensors and patrols.

I like the idea becuase if a species just waltz into an area they would probably not go into battle expecting to be shot at (except klingons who if this was implemented shouldn't be affected  ) and I esspecially like the idea of acctually having to pay more attention to patrols and senor stations

It dosen't make sense tho. You say Red Alert and your shields pop up and weapons charge within a few seconds. Theres no debating that, the battlestations for the majority of the crew is damage control, triaje or repelling boarders.

To clarify, I was thinking about this mostly for space stations.

There seems to be arming weapons, transfering power from ___ to shields, running to the right position to fire, preparing scanners to targer ships as opposed to space, preparing any type of counter-measures, etc.

I agree that for putting up a shield, and firing a shot or two, (maybe yellow alert), this could be done pretty quickly. Preparing (and I am thinking about DS9 here) for a major attack seems to be a bigger task.

I also agree that the ships are almost always on a hair trigger. But even then, the sometimes must let down their guard, such as during a science mission (interesting possibilites there as well).

But any station can have it's shields up nearly instantanious unless it's about 50 years old...Weapons only take about 10 seconds to charge and the only thing DS9 ever prepared for was using that pulse to destroy the wormhole or evacuating the civilians before a battle from what I recall.

Love this idea. it could be aplide to all statoins, in green alert, Science is faster resorses are gatherd at a greater amoumt, in red they are slow and less. Green on ships could be used as a tatical advantige...say green makes shilds stronger becouse weapons are not on. this would alow you to scout safer, shoot you could aply the shild thing to the starbases to..that way you can choose A: High shields and better defence. B: Lower defences but faster shooting. this reminds me of BCs versitilyt on ship resorces...this is a relay good idea. Defender...why are you fighting it? this is the best idea i have seen for...for a long time. lol

Nice idea, but i don't think its good for the rts gameplay

I think in this case we should be a bit unrealistic ;)
