A possible solution might be if the wasted xp that didn't rank up the ship could be transferred to another ship that attacked the destroyed Borg ship. The xp could be given to the ship that (not including the ship that killed the borg ship) did the most damage to the Borg vessel. If the xp ranked up this second ship and there was still xp left over it could go to the next ship and so on. This could even out fleets leveling up quite a bit.

The way I see it there are a couple of problems with allowing more than one ship to gain xp from destroying a Borg ship, the fact that the Borg don't gain xp at all, and that it opens a possible exploit. Gather a bunch of rookie units around one strong vet, go Borg hunting, *poof* now you have multiple strong vets. Rinse, repeat.

Yes, just go hunting the largest, most powerful multi-targeting ships in the game with a bunch of rookies (often great at assimilation). That 'exploit' would most often be a one-way ticket to the Collective.

The only ship that would give real exp is the Cube, good luck hunting that monster casually.

Borg Probes give 50 to 62 xp depending on module and avatar. A green Dominion Bug only needs 17 xp to rank up as do several other early game ships from the different races. Splitting xp for killing Borg ships will give the non-Borg races too much of an early game advantage, in my opinion. :)

If you kill a Probe with about 2 or 3 Sabres or bugs, maybe you'll go up a single rank with one victory. Wanna try killing any Borg ship with that many ships of the same type? The more ships you use, the less exp each gets and you need multiple to kill one.

Borg ships are the only ones powerful enough to actually make you earn the exp. Except the Dreadnought.

we will probably still stick with the current system :) we like it to be a bit less predictable. but we will look at it further

I quite like the system right now - FO after all isn't about leveling up your elite ships, that's just a consequence of battle. Any more emphasis and it would be a Warcraft III type game...

I too like the current system too.  However there is one thing that it could benefit from. If a saber kills a cube I think it should gain more than just 1 rank! :P

Also, you can get experience from killing your own ships?

No. If that was possible before, it's gone now.

it was never possible as far as i can remember. i tried it many patches ago.

for the sabre getting multiple ranks from killing a cube, there are two points i have on this:

1) its a good idea, because then the klingons will not have as many supply issues.

2) its a bad idea because it makes no sense, if a sabre comes into battle at the last moment after all its friends got killed by the cube, and the cube is at 1% hull and the sabre kills it, the crew of the sabre didn't really learn much. that's why i like the idea of gaining a little xp for every second you are in battle, because it's being in battle that sharpens up the crew, not just winning.

So what if xp was based on how long a ship has been in battle and if the target was killed?

Putting it that way, I like the 'X exp per second' idea more.

I presume the amount of exp would depend on when the winning ship fired its first shot rather than when you click the target?

i was thinking that there would be constant trickle for being in battle and doing damage, but if you get a win maybe a small boost.

More realtrekistic for fighting rather than killing to get you xp. It will certainly be interesting to see hit-and-run tactics made more effective. I look forward to the day my fleeing Sabers rank up from hurting some B'rels pretty bad while running away.

Nah, you could never get experience from killing your own ships :)

I still think the current xp system makes sense - even if you have a Saber kill a Cube, it's only finishing it off, not actually killing the entire thing! So really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have huge amounts of xp transferred. Of course the system is unrealistic in general - but I think that if FO becomes any more focused toward xp gathering we end up with some serious imbalances. The beauty of it now is that officer rank and veteran rank abilities are luck of the draw and you aren't trying to level up a specific ship in multiplayer battles. If they were, you'd have to drastically scale down a lot of officer rank abilities because you'd just have people figuring out how to level up particular ships and then wipe the floor by using them.
