Have to say i would vote for the Excalibur (and have done) it's a large experimental warship that shares a sort of resembelance to the Soveriegn, Descent, Excelsior Mark II. It would help keep that more "classic" federation ship with it's two sweeping back warp naccels and an obvious saucer section as well..
Fluff wise the Excalibur is often stated to have multiple quantum torpedo turrets and a heavy amount of phaser arrays. I would just make it the opposite of the Descent. So where the Descent is defensive the Excalibur is an experimental offensive ship... Game wise it fits reasonably well as the Federation can suffer quite badly in the assault of enemy strongholds due to needing either officer class Excelsior Mark II's or chancing on warp in Steam runners. Stands to reason then that a heavy ship capable of pounding defenses with a large number of torpedoes (and thus also being good for head to head with battleships etc) would fit the bill...

As much as I love the Descent, the Excalibr should pretty much fill the same niche
Although actually it doesn't have this dual-shielding effect, so perhaps they don't need to be mutually exclusive. In fact, imo the Excalibur could just be a very similar (to the Descent, albeit with a slightly lower def and slightly higher off. to balance it out) Experimental warp-in ship with some other special weapon. Heh, transwarp drive doesn't sound too bad, seeing as it couldn't take the rest of a fleet with it. Or maybe it could? Now that would be an awesome effect! Or how about an experimental, single use warp-in weapon on the fed +borg mixed-tech yard? Ooooooh, my thoughts look like this (:woot:) right now...
*sigh* Can we at least have the Excalibur as a map object in fleetops style to play around with?
If there's ever need for a ship replacement, that Diligent Class looks sweet as well!

I have an idea. When you call in for experimental support, it sends in both the Descent and Excalibur, consuming 7 slots, still allowing you 1 regular reinforcement call.
