You will also need winrar or 7zip for the archives as well.

haha, I am slightly confuzzled. 7zip and winrar? Might as well be talking to me in Polish.

I will start with finding the bzn folder and such.

Any particular opinions for more than eight starting locations for future larger maps?

As for having additional units beyond the starbase... I found one of the things I liked most about A1 and A2 was how on each level for campaign I got different start settings, that progressively got better over the levels.
One of the main reasons I go back to play the campaigns sometimes. I might look into making some of those maps myself, but not to sure I'd be able to do it... might not be hard, lol but I'm really not very competent with machines.

One of my favourites was the first Borg mission in A2, i think, where you were given a fleet of assimilators and you had to collect 3000 of dilithium/tritanium. haha, I just spammed assimilators and destroyed the Federation and Klingon fleets in the sector. Quite fun.

7zip and winrar are programs that compress stuff.

most people upload files as .zip or .rar which are really very similar. just compressed archives.

7zip can handle both easily and is 100% free, just google it.

when u download a map from the forums or from astro u either download the 3 files (bzn txt & bmp) individually or in an archive.

u can get the three files out of the archive any way u like. in 7zip just push extract and they will all go where u tell them to.

then put all 3 files in the bzn folder and you're done. they will appear next time u start fleetops.

I highly support the idea of extra starting locations for random placement.  Encourages real scouting, rather than map memorization (which I've never been fond of).

Adds more real strategy to the game, when you don't know where your enemies are until you actually see them, and have to account for the possibility that where you think they are is entirely wrong.

Yes, the only problem- I'm guessing... is that this requires making more equal starting points with moons and such, expansions, but I dunno, can a map be split evenly between 10 12 14 or more starting locations so that it is fair?

Anyways, just an idea that could be tested if people like it.

As for map memorization... I think after a map is played several times, it will become familiar. But even with map memorization, if a map is set for x amount of people, but the map has x+3 amount of starting locations, then it will force people to still scout out several different areas until they find the right ones.

So, my only thought, is that if we give maps designed for say 5 players, eight starting locations... it would then just become an eight player map... I mean if it was made equal and all, right? So this may be slightly impractical.
Any thoughts around this? Perhaps it is unavoidable to have equal number of starting locations as being same for number of players. Don't know.

But for maps already designed for eight players, giving more could be an interesting alteration.

Agreed, I think it could add more strategy and uncertainty to the game, at least the beginning part.
