Just an idea to re-do map objects to be a tad more trekish........

- Asteroid fields: make them new nebula types instead, and add damage effects that increase with the density of the field, smaller ships/scouts are virtualy immune to the damage as they're small enough to dodge (but still have a low % chance to be hit, and take shield damage, or hull/system damage if shields down). Bigger the ship, the higher chance and higher damage per second due to more exposed hull surface. Mining ships should have a very low % chance to be hit, they're designed to operate in such places.

- Huge 'roids:
Make them able to be colonized, thru a special beam weapon from mining ships.
First beamdown wave will be rather small, and require research/construction to expand the base into a mining colony.
They generate a steady trickle of resources (and at larger supplies, a VERY low supply trickle) that increases as they grow in size.
Give them a hull repair rate so high that bombarding them may remove the crew, but cannot blow it up.
Since they cannot be blown up, they will require ground forces be beamed in bulk to capture them

Habitable asteroids (planetoids?), not likely to happen. Colonization was removed, and I doubt it would come back in.

colonisation was silly in a rts.

in a game like birth of the federation it made sense. but not in a pew pew boom boom game.

Colonizing a planet, aye.

Putting a few hundred people onto a rock in space in a RTS were you can build starbases isn't.

And tyler, this isnt so much colonization as it is a new type of mining and making use of map objects.

Think of that DS9 episode were the Fed/Dom battle over that rock that was captured by the feds, same principal, rocks used for mining, and cause its just a huge rock in space, and cant be blown up, you have to beam troops down to capture it.

Prehaps make it unable to re-crew, forcing resupply convoys, of course then the issue would be borg assims.

It's not that differnt than some of the other race ideas in Dom's guide to fleet ops, I seem to remember at least one of them had a resoruce structure that would be built around resource moons.

building a mining station into an asteroid/moon is sensible and i like it.

i wouldnt consider it colonising though as it would be a mine not a place to live.

a colony would have civilians doing schools and art and stuff that dont matter for war.

Exactly, this would be a war footing mine/outpost.

Prehaps make them more important by adding things like a large sensor and tachyon ping that can be added thru upgrades (for VERY expenseve costs).

As for handling them code wise, if possible it'd be best to treat them like derelict ships/stations placed on a map,  but the main issue there is making them not targetable except by transporters.

Of course, Borg would have a massive advantage with these, but if it were combined with remaking asteroid fields into areas that damage ships, Borg would be somewhat held at bay here.

I would go for this idea.

I'm still not sure about the plantoid-side outpost, but then I justified planet colonization the same way (military outpost, rather than an genuine colony). I would not make a fuss if it was included.

Well apparently something similar is allready prepared for fleet ops.........

Intelligence Report: Ciadan - The Hitchhiker's Guide to Fleet Operations
Only the Ciadan can build "Dyson Spheres" (they don't call them Dyson Spheres though). These facilities are automated, so they don't have crew. However, if you assimilate or board the necessary Ciadan ships you can build up one yourself. If there is a “Dyson Sphere” around a resource moon, no other player can mine from this moon. Of course the sphere can be destroyed like every mining station.

Not 100% the same, but pretty close. But this would fit most races much better.

That's a bit closer to the standard Mining station than this idea, just around the moon instead of to the side.

Really like the idea of adding a feature where asteroids can be moved through... but we aren't replacing the asteroids we have now are we? If we were to do this, having the asteroids still be like walls is good, but adding some that are move-through-able would be neat.

lol - Thinking of a map, where aside from your initial base, and space for research structures and all, 90 percent of the map is passable asteroids, and you build swarm of scouts and destroyers because battleships get pounded.

lol it would also be a very non-borg map indeed.

Maybe if this turns out to happen, give the borg some asteroid adaptation or something to help them with it to do les damage.

I was never a fan of the colonization added in A2, ok... fine war footing... but in this game, how would it be a war footing? You want to be able to get scouts (capture them)? I'm indifferent to it I guess for colonization... maybe just a low crew level or something.

I imagine it's possible to just use the current astroid field as a nebula, the only real problem would be coding how much damage what ship takes.

Yup. It'd be intersting. Especily if smaller ships were given a VERY low (0.0001%) chance to get hit, so big swarms..... with the occasional ship just exploding or loosing a system.

I already brought this up.;)

  I've got one:

  -  Hemo'rrhoids:
Large Space bumps that surface on the exhaust pipes of your starships and cause severe irritation.  Usually caused by stress and or excessive squeezing of the anus torpedo-tube trigger.

  :D

  Yes?  No?
