Late game: pass through blocking triggers

Oh, I'm sure we can come up with equally cool abilities for the other races

Romulans: All ships gain Phase Cloak for around 100 energy. It allows them to move slightly faster, pass through blocking triggers, and use specials for half-cost while the cloak it active (so basically they get 1 special and they're out of energy)
Klingons: All ships gain Supreme Transport: can transport without either ship lowering shields, for a large energy-per-second cost. Enemy ships being boarded lose weapon control unless they are Large. If a ship is captured this way any damaged subsystems remain active.
Dominion: All ship supply costs reduced to 2/3 and ships gain the special mode Nanobot Repair which doubles their natural shield, hull, and special energy regen in exchange for a point of supply every few seconds.
Federation: Small and Medium ships gain Emergency Warp: when ordered to repair at a yard they will turn and warp directly to it after a few seconds. Large ships gain a chance to trigger Cover Fire for any fed ship.
Borg: Constructors, Cubes, Diamonds can drop Transwarp links which take 30 seconds to build and form a wormhole network only the Borg can use. Scubes, Probes, and Detectors can activate a special to warp to the nearest one.
Noxter: Breeders can cause massive gravitational explosions in Asteroid fields. The field deals damage per second to everything nearby that isn't Noxter, damage based on the distance from the field.

I'm not saying it isn't cool for the Romulans. I'm saying that it can't go only to them with the other races getting other stuff, because it wouldn't be fair for them to be stuck with it instead of that other cool stuff on maps without many asteroid fields.
I think each race having their own way to do the same thing (pass through asteroids) would be the best way to go.

All a ship would have to do is move slowly. It's not like asteroids are some impervious wall that ships need to break through or jump over. Just make the research have something to do with navigational deflectors, and you have all the technobabble you need to sell the concept.
