nathanj wrote:The gym actually makes sense to have separate since you have 3 shifts (I assume) and people would want to use a gym at all hours anyways.
we'll make the assumption of 3 shifts, despite the fact that this assumption is risky as sisko wasn't alien to the idea of a 4 shift system on ds9.
with 3 shifts, that's probably roughly 8 hours working, 8 hours sleeping and 8 hours for everything else (washing/eating/24th century fapping*).
so only 1 shift will be free to use a gym at any point in time. which still doesn't affect the number of gyms needed. crew size affects that. a large crew will result in lots of people being off duty at the same time.
but still, holodecks would be the way to go here, a gym is only useful if people want to exercise. a holodeck is useful for other things. power would only be needed for simple stationary gym apparatus, no interactive holo characters or moving of the boundaries. same with fencing and phaser ranges. having 2 rooms that can be repurposed for all needs, instead of 3 separate rooms each of which does 1 thing, saves 1 room.
a holodeck could even be divided into two (or more) with a projected wall, to allow half the room to be a gym, and the other half to be fencing. since the boundaries don't need to move for gym/fencing/phaser range the holodeck can easily be split up into multiple sections.
the worst offender was the yoga room. which was just a room with a mirror on 2 walls. the mirrors were useless, they could have yogad anywhere with a carpet.
nathanj wrote:I thought the phaser ranges were holodecks. There was a scene with Worf shooting pixies and missing alot and then Whoopi comes in and shoots everything up all cowgirl style. Maybe thats why Worf focused on his Klingon martial arts so much because he sucked with ranged weapons.
nope. they were actual rooms. very large rooms that weren't lit at the walls to allow the targets to be the only visible thing. a giant poorly lit room is useless if nobody wants to practice phasering. also the real nature of the room means that the walls have to be resistant to repeated phasering (presumably at a low level) without getting scarred. also the room would need to store and service some (possibly not real but still needing power) phasers.
see ma: http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Phaser_range
you might be thinking of the game of Velocity, shown in voyager, where janeway and borg tits play phaser games on the holodeck and janeway somehow wins. a much more sensible place to phaser things. the phasers can even be holographic.
*quark used holodecks (holosuites) for what can best be described as fapping (kira was such a moralfag about that), i wonder if that happened on starfleet holodecks.
also once the player is done, i wonder if they have to use a squeegee to clean the walls and floor, because once the holodeck is turned off, the player's "deposit" won't be removed (ignoring that sona corpse in insurrection). i doubt the holodeck can clean itself as it wouldn't be safe for it to be able to destroy (ie vapourise) real matter without the safety protocols turned off, which requires some level of clearance.

Ok ok, so I'll admit it, I have less of a problem with the intrepid being a buildable ship than the fact that it has a tricobalt torpedo launcher. They specifically said it was not normal for them to carry that type of weapon in canon, and what do we do? Give it a tricobalt special weapon...
Never have been a fan of the tricobalt myself. I use them and used correctly it's mighty effective, but it simply doesn't feel right on an Intrepid.
Before anyone says anything i know the mixed tech is going to get an overhaul. Currently it's the monsoon and defiant which get most attention in mixed tech. Intrepid only get a little love from the Borg while i would imagine the Borg hate the intrepid class with a vengeance after Janeway ;p
Still a medium sized vessel with a good computer capacity and room enough for modification would be THE ideal vessel to go mixed tech with.
Endgame armor is planned, but why not dump a cloak or Isokinetic canon on it. There's so much which can be done with Voyager in mind. The warship voyager is one more example.
I hope that i'll see several mixed tech Intrepid variants in the future releases.

As long as they don't get rid of the Miranda 2s. I love those ships. And of course my cloaked Defiants which are my all time favorite ship.
Regarding the gym/holodeck thing. Did they ever mention how much of a power drain holodecks are on the overall ship.? Since they are constanty using forcefields and replicating objects that are close enough to touch I would imagine that they would be taxing on some level. From a room efficiency stand point it makes sense to have all in one holodeck rooms but from a power usage point of view that would be pretty wasteful. It would make sense on a small ship like a Defiant class to use one room for everything but for a large vessel like a Galaxy they have the room to spare since the ship was designed to hold a couple thousand extra people if need be.
If that room that Worf and Whoopi used was only purposed for that that really is a waste of space. You would be much better off having weekly phaser training in groups on the holodeck where you can create realistic scenarios instead of glowing balls of color..............although I suppose that in the Star Trek universe you are going to end up fighting glowing color balls at some point anyways.

They never said how much power it used, all we got about them is that it has its own power supply so Voyager writers could have their Holodeck stories despite an alleged power shortage.

nelix set tuvok up with a holo version of his wife on voyager.. so i guess nelix was using for that too..
edit
as for the using a holodeck for phaser practice, regardless of power use, would you want to use you geforce 3,000,000 graphics card running for that?

bingo. holodecks aren't gonna suck power needed for other things.
also just like gyms/fencing/phaser ranges, when the ship needs its power for fight/run, it'll be at red alert and no crew will be using these rooms, so the holodecks will be off anyway. even if we assume the holodecks use the normal ship's fuel, there was never a fuel shortage in TNG. they could waste as much power on replicators as they wanted, and riker did exactly that by covering a table with plates of klingon food which he could never hope to finish.
i was only suggesting splitting a holodeck into two rooms when all the others are in use for holonovels or simulations or stuff.
hellodean wrote:nelix set tuvok up with a holo version of his wife on voyager.. so i guess nelix was using for that too..
very good point, tuvok couldn't mind meld with that hologram, so his "release" had to be of the more traditional nature (humans and vulcan intrebreed a lot, I'm presuming their birds and bees is roughly the same). I hope neelix was the one given the squeegee after he was done.
also it would be funny when he turns off the program. he left some bodily fluids in his holowife, when he turns the program off, she would disappear and then "splat" as the real matter falls to the floor.

holophasers

also i have a radeon card, so i have to get angry and say i'd never use a geforce, even though I don't care about the difference in branding, the rules of graphics card fanboying are clear.
knowing star trek a "radeon" would probably be a technobabble particle/radiation in the future, like nadions.

Intrepid is deep space exploration ship, which is reasonably made to survive the unknown. Uber speedy computers with bio-neural gel conduits, quite maneuverable and quality engines etc etc. Although smaller than Galaxy or Sov class ships, it`s strong on it`s own, much more versatile than some other fed ships, aka more adjustable to certain situations.

Enterprise-D changed from a 3-shift system to a 4-shift system at least during the period of the "Chain of Command" two-parter. Seeing as some of the changes Jellico made (eg Troi wearing a proper uniform rather than more civilian attire) stayed on after Picard resumed command, it's quite possible it stayed using a 4-shift pattern.

"Hollow Pursuits". Barclay & the "Goddess of Empathy". Not definite, but definitely hinted at.
Edit: As for specialised rooms as opposed to adding more holodecks -- well, I can see there being an argument for them, not least that even on a ship of Voyager's size there'll be a good amount of internal volume that can dedicated to such rooms as a gymnasium or a phaser range. There are also operational benefits as well -- each room is individually much simpler to maintain than a holodeck.
