Iconian Race: What should come with it?

Nearly every major race in Stargate has access to Stargates that are similar to Iconian portals (even not-so-advanced ones), and they still use Ships to travel. Despite the fact that pretty much every world shown has a gate.

Most races that had the ability to travel through space still needed a space fleet regardless of the existence or ability to use the stargate as the stargate has some disadvantages: 1) The gate could only remain open for approximately 38 minutes, and would then need to be re-opened, and in a conflict at that point the opposing planet could potentially open the gate themselves and either retaliate or simply open it to another planet and escape/bide their time while preventing the attacker from opening it. 2) The gate is a very obvious choke point, defenses can be easily massed and fortified, potentially killing anyone the moment they step through.  3) An Iris/Shield placed millimeters from the event horizon would stop any solid objects from materializing, preventing invasion or decimation by WMD.  4) Gates can be buried, preventing all gate travel to or from that planet. 5) The fact that in reality only a few hundred or thousand of the billions of planets in our galaxy alone actually have a stargate, also means space travel is a necessity for true expansion and resource gathering.  Thus space travel was still very much needed whether for simple exploration, or economic, resource or military expansion.

As for the Iconians, it is likely they did have ships as all other races use ships and it would be the most obvious way to defend yourself from ship based attacks.

Do not forget the Iconians left behind those probes...and the one probe destroyed the Enterpise-Ds sister ship the yamato with a computer virus. A good example of a race that used gates as well as ships was the wraith and the ori. Oh and the gould.

And a good example of a race that used only Ships was the Ashen Confederacy, even tho the only ship we ever saw was the harvester and the Ashen only appeared in 2 episodes as I remember.  They didn't use stargates as they only recently discovered one and didn't know any addresses.  Would have been good to see more of this race, they apparently had the power to wipe out the Goa'uld in an alternate timeline.

Well, i think the Iconians must have had ships, there are places you don´t want to go, like asteroid belts from which you mine....

BUT, if the Iconians sent people through their portals to, let´s say study a supernova, they were probably bombed out of existence by one of their civil rights movements...

That's not technically true; the ashen DID use stargates, for example they used them to transfer grain between worlds.

So the only thing we are certain of is that they have to have portal technology in there, everything else is unknown or unsure.  Just trying to come up with a ship hurts my head! Aggh!  Can Doca or someone PLEASE give me an example of a ship so I don't fry my brain out trying to think of one!

well play the ciadan, they will have Dysons spheres arround moons to collect resources, or play the iconians, who dont have any resources at all..
okok, you cant play them in the current beta, I'm back to work now 

I wonder if this is still the plan...

Daca did say they would be having advanced technology.

They would not be benevolent like the federation.

The caiden would be based on dilitiom not sheer what this means. They would be having old/out dated technologies.

Do a sheer threes more info on the forum.
