There is word that there will be a Lakota/Ent-B style refit model for the Excelsior upon veteran rank-up and potentially a Venture refit model for the Galaxy.

My question is this;

Will the ship in question just spontaneously turn into the refit model? If that is the design choice I am OK with it but I think it would look a little awkward. So perhaps having to send the ship back to yard for the refit where after a short build time it would then pop out like new would add an element of realism and I think some fun; by having to protect a veteran ship until it can get back to yard to upgrade.

Have a look at the Negh'Var.
There we already have the "refit by final levelup".

The Negh'Var model changes? I have not played Klingon is some time. They are my least favorite race to play as.

The veteran gains the massive cannons at the bottom and starts to look like an actual Negh'Var, before that it looks more like the Voodieh-varient from fututre episodes.

And they just spontaneously appear when it ranks up? Is this how the refit model enhancements will be handled for Federation Veteran Refit upgrades as well?

Currently, things just kind of snap into a change. I'm sure that by 3.5 we'll have the changes appear to be built on (using the ship/station building effect to show the new parts being constructed onto the ship.) Sometime before that we will see a timer on refits so that they don't change stats and such instantly, but I don't know if this will effect refits created thru rankups.

Ok cool, as long as something is planned for eventually having a gradual 'upgrade' animation i'm ok with this.  :thumbsup:

The timer is definitely planned, I'm not entirely sure animations are planned right now, but I would be very surprised if they weren't (next logical step, a timer with a snap would look even sillier than a snap without a timer.)

Replaceweapon indeed will eventually be able to have a time of replacement. :)

Awesome! I can see it now...

Ensign: "When will we have our new systems operational sir?"

Captain: "As soon as this damned timer finishes..."

What we really need is to be able to have programmable animations.  that would be cool. B)

From what I've seen with the recent station additions, there already is a morphing animation that can be used for the replaceweapon or somesuch. The Dodecahedron transforming into the relay is one, and the Romulan defense turret changing firing modes is the other. I'm sure this could be implemented on the ship's body-changing in the future
