I think the 'Sphere' formation is the Circle (circle around the target) or the Column formation (minimal sensor footprint).

Canny wrote:the wall formation is tactically the best option open besides sphere formation, with wall formation all the ships fire in one go instead of the standard sheet formation where you loose alot of ships before you attack. separating the ships by their speed and class is not viable, i wouldnt build 20 odd sabers, group them and send em into a fortified expansion, they would all be destroyed before the defenses go down not to mention a waste of resources.
speaking of formations, ship speeds are completely different and most ships dont remain in formation until they reach their destination, what is the point in a formation when half your fleet has been destroyed and the rest become stragglers? stock A2 had a good system in use, once in a formation, the ships always remained in formation at the speed of the slowest ship in that formation.
That last paragraph is just plain wrong. Stock A2 fleets never stayed in formation. But if you hold the control button all ships fly at the same speed.
I wasn't contemplating separating your ships - that's just silly, just have more than 1 fleet in each attack force, so you can order them to attack different targets and have the ships you want to tank, tanking. and you also have 10 times the flexibility and maneuverability/

a formation in the shape of a sphere, homeworld series used to do, its excellent at destroying really tough ships with fighters in no time, it can be adapted to defeat bases and fleets.

well that sphere is only useful once u have your enemy surrounded. if your fleet is approaching the enemy fleet the wall is still better because it brings the most fire on the enemy at once. no ships out of range. but if you close in then sphere could help. but not in fleetops. i dont think it would matter as ships move too fast.

indeed, tactically the wall is better then the sheet. if you micromanage you still loose the same amount of ships its just a matter of getting all your ships to the enemy so it would be impossible to loose too many ships. base attack or ship combat.

Wall... is that the 'assault wall' or just a block of ships?
Usually worked for me when I used the X formation. They rarely left unless a battle started and I had them use the 'arrow' attack-style.
