I had an idea while commenting on how ships seem to be able to fire from just barely out of weapons range.  This idea includes reducing the accuracy and/or damage by a certain amount for every unit that the weapon is fired from that is not within the specified range of the weapon.

Example, if the weapons range of a phaser is 800 units, but the target is 1000 units away, the ship could still fire at the target, but the target wouldn't receive the full potential damage.  A torpedo under the same conditions would have a far greater chance at missing it's target from such a long range and a pulse would also have a far greater chance at missing and would do far less damage.

I see balance problems abound.

Yeah, phasers still have a max range, and are tuned to work at a specific one.

I think it would be a nice addition if the range at which a ship/station can be targeted depended on the size of the target.

E.g. a Saber (Long range weapon) can target Cubes, Dreadnoughts, and Battleships at long range. Smaller vessels (cruisers) at medium range and small agile vessels only at short range.

Hmm... again, how would this actually benefit the gameplay and enjoyment for the players (in general, not just yourself)?

I think it's a realism thing, like imitating directed energy disipating over distance.

I can understand that, and if realism were the important thing here, I'd be all for it. But as for gameplay it has no benefit.

Unless, of course, you have it as a special weapon on a couple of ships. A replaceweapon type thing that increases the range but drastically reduces the accuracy of all shipboard weapons.

This would actually be a very cool feature.  Perhaps a mode like the Norexan's MPW that can do a limited number of shots that way, or even timer based like the phalanx's magnan phaser, where it fires 4-5 shots and has to recharge, but you get the benefit of range with the decreased accuracy.

Or even reduce damage instead of accuracy.  We could always put it on the chonaq.  You know, that ship that everyone uses. :woot:

[Cue the people who say, "Hey, I use the Chonaq!!! >:(]

Perfect copy's no excuse to use the wrong name. Who knows what mal called it by leaving it out...

Tyler is very anal about Klingon spelling (rightly so, a slip of the tongue/fingers and you could mean something totally different)
