Don't forget that railguns also can attain phenomenal velocities and rapid rates of fire (yes flack screen, but also really good at just doing pinpoint damage by firing... for instance... tungsten bolts).

Yes, but it's like fusion cubes.  You can't make a 2 cube fusion cube, or a 3 cube fusion cube, and so on, unless you make a new model for each.  So what if you wanted to make a 100 torpedo defense ring?  That would take 100 models, plus, what if you can't make a ring?  Then you'd have to make another hundred models for the ellipse.

Alternative:

You set up a static ring with "pod"-modules. Every pod module can be a turret or a support building. Then you restrict the support buildings to "one" and there you go.

I don't think the Devs will really go for this for the Borg though, as the Ciadan are planned on getting stations that all have weapons (including their mining station.. )  :shifty:

It is true that a Mass driver and a rail gun are  not truely the same but close in principle . A Mass driver uses large hunks of Matter.  Typically large hunks of rock propeled by a magnetic  driver assembly fitted to the  projectile . Once leaving the laungh vehicle the projectile  also uses gravity  to carry it to its target .Great for bombarding a city, while in orbit,or stationary target. mass Drivers usally are a long range weapond. To properly use one(unless you want a "one shot wonder") it would take a very lage facility to  locate, deliver to the weapond with Mass( Ie rocky asteroids) ,fitting the Projectiles  with launch rings.Plus provide Huge  amounts of power crew and repairs  weapond to  reload after fireing .However the "Rail gun"  uses the same principle  of accererating a Specefic mass, here Ie the  solid metal projectile  to a target . It does it in a lot smaller package at a much higer rate of fire, and has extremely rapid reload time. The example  I gave of The Gauss rifle in  Mech warrior was to show  what type of weapond it was.  The Gauss rifle (cannon) was A Up graded version of the  Light Gauss rifle, wich has a range of 1200 yards, 30 shots per ton 12 damage points per projectile strike and 13 tons for the launch  equipment. and 2 slots on a mech frame and .08 heat load (Hvy  Gauss rifle/cannon has the  stats of 24 shots per ton, 3 slots  on mech frame  1 point heat load ,17points damage  range of 800 and  16 tons for launch tube. The Gauss rifle example was to show that  they are not a an Uber long range / uber devastating weapond.  Because the size of the vessel (ie Mech) was limited to  a certian tonnage for ALL of you mechs equipment and onboard ammo.

Once again, a gauss weapon (or coilgun if you will) is not a railgun. See Coilgun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
, if you trust the source.

Simple rundown of the basis of Gauss technology.

At it's most fundamental, a Gauss device is a series of magnetic coils or rings that activate in sequence to accelerate a ferrous item to high velocity and propel it outwards.  These coils never make contact with the projectile.

Simple rundown of the basis of Rail technology.

A Rail device uses a strip of highly conductive metal and a series of magnets, accellerating a piece of ferrous material down it's length.  The projectile touches the rail the whole way.

The military experimented with Rail devices already, RL.  The Rail itself had to be changed every 3 shots due to warping of the metal.  Gauss devices are far more likely due to this one weakness.

Rail guns still are a big deal, at least to the U.S. Navy: I don't think there is any plan to shift to Gauss style weaponry (which actually has many more issues than railgun tech), especially considering contracts have already been signed and succesful prototypes built  :shifty:
