Exactly. The smaller the ship the faster it is and propably the harder it is to hit it. I think the small warships are absolutely okay for the feds.
Has someone ever taken a look at the three seperated parts of the Prometheus? The undermost (Is this really the right word?!) part of the Prometheus looks very similar to the Avalon. Coincidence?

thus going against trek history. it makes no sense then that star fleet doesnt just build fleets of these new tiny warships, and send them into battle in place of the others, hell you could probably build more than 10 defiants for every 1 galaxy. not only that but this would cut the crew casualty rate as well. blahAdmiral Adama wrote:the reason they are now smaller is because they are mainly warships and not science ships. less science equipment means more room for the boom boom equipment

on topic: both Doca & optec have said that a Descent redo is already on the to-do list... so case closed already.

when the prom was built the feds were going through a tough time with the borg and dominion and so they wanted an experimental warship just in case things started to go wrong. the feds don't build alot of them because thier primary mission was exploration.
and the defiant was so packed full with technology that it probaly cost more than to refit and old galaxy

As far as we can tell from TV we know that the Defiant and the Prometheus were prototypes. We can't be sure if the Federation didn't plan to build whole fleets of Defiants and Prometheus-class ships if there would (have) be(en) a need to do so.

no no no. The Defiant was a Prototype but they did eventually build more. Thats how when the defiant was destroyed in DS9 they brought it back(and in first contact) as the Sau Paulo(or something)
I think that the reason that there were no more Prometheuses is that by the time they were ready to be built, the federation was at last at peace.

That's exactly what I tried to point out.

actually the defiants were cheaper to build than refitting an excelsior, so i imagine building an enormous galaxy class would cost considerably more.Admiral Adama wrote: and the defiant was so packed full with technology that it probaly cost more than to refit and old galaxy
and FC was set before the Dominion war.

I would imagine that defiants are pretty common escorts at this point. I mean we saw two flying with the Akira in message in a bottle. The replacement for the defiant (minus the storyline' need of a ship
) was pretty quick occurrence, and than you had the defiant that they handed over to cadets. So I imagine the ships are pretty easy to produce.
As for the Promi, considering paramounts love of CGI recycling I am pretty sure there are a lot of them
but seriously, we know there was one pretty close to earth weather or not it was "the Prometheus" I'm not sure, but I would imagine that it, the akira, the sovi, the sabre, the steamrunner, the defiant, and the galaxy's and nebula no make up a good percent of the fleet with the excelsior moving on and the miranda's all but wiped out.
